Overview

Cornwall is popular throughout the year, due to its "mild climate, breathtaking scenery and long stretches of sandy beach" (Condé Nast Traveller), and its Atlantic coast is dotted with some of the UK's most beautiful coves and bays.

The Gannet Inn is in the village of Carbis Bay on the county's north coast. The country-style property opened in 2015 and has "unique interiors with all the style and finesse of a boutique hotel", according to The AA.

The art galleries and winding cobbled streets of St Ives are five minutes' drive away, while the hotel's sister property, Carbis Bay Hotel, is 15 minutes' walk away -- guests at The Gannet Inn can head there to use the hotel's spa facilities, outdoor pool and private Blue Flag beach.

The Gannet Inn has a restaurant that serves classic British dishes, burgers and pasta, and a bar with a dartboard and a pool table. There is also a lounge with a fireplace and leather armchairs. Breakfast is served daily from 7:30-10am.

"Stylish, high-standard" (The AA) bedrooms are individually designed and soundproof, and feature neutral décor and bespoke furniture. Wi-Fi is free.

The location was good, although slightly away from the beach area but was a good base to explore. The room was great, although the shower was very poor because it had no power; to the extent it was hard to remove shampoo from hair. The sea view from the room was really great. Notwithstanding the aforementioned receptionist, the staff were friendly and professional and genuinely cared about the guests.

I returned from a 2nd day of touring Cornwall, only to find the car park was full. I had no option but to very slightly block someone in; causing the least overall problem to anyone. Nevertheless, my wife let the reception know and a snooty receptionist said "no you can't leave it there, park it in front of these other cars" (causing much more of a problem for many more guests). I did this, we then went into the restaurant, ordered our meal and when my soup arrived, the same snooty receptionist interrupted our meal asking if I could now move our car again, saying a space had become available and we would then be left unmolested for the rest of the evening. I went outside to move my car, only to find that she'd let someone else park their car in this spot which meant I had no space available. I was then told that I could park my car out on the road, to which I replied I was not prepared to park my car in an unsecured location on a grass verge outside the hotel, I was advised that I could park it in a nearby hotel car park (it was raining torrentially and I'd had 2 alcoholic drinks) so I declined. She then instructed me to park it where I'd originally parked. I asked who had taken my supposedly reserved space... only to be told it was a restaurant customer. She wouldn't accept my claim that she was not being logical in giving the space to someone who'd be leaving after their meal, whereas I wouldn't want to move until the next morning. Furthermore that she was now asking me to park in exactly the same place as I'd originally (considerately) parked and that despite ruining my (expensive meal) by calling me outside half way through my first course. All that she would say was that she'd let me know when another space came available. Unfortunately, I couldn't relax through the remainder of my meal, moreover, I wasn't given a space until after I'd finished my meal and had (sort of) retired to our room for the evening. With her attitude, came little sympathy; instead an attitude best described as detachment or arrogance. A shame because this individual completely spoiled our meal the last day of our stay, which was an otherwise nice and relaxed stay. She is definitely not a good ambassador for the hotel brand and certainly not a true reflection of the other staff at the hotel, who were all generally polite and customer centric. Ultimately, I felt that I was demoted to a hotel valet, not a guest.

Nice sea-facing room. Our room was ready when we arrived at 1pm which was great! We had an excellent dinner … the hake was amazing! Lovely breakfast. Staff courteous and good service. Ideal proximity from St Ives … we walked there and took the train back. We would definitely stay again!

Our stay at the Gannet Inn was simply wonderful. We received a warm welcome which was informative about our stay. There are places to sit and relax and the welcome cocktail went down well. Our room was well appointed and comfortable. The food itself was lovely. The menu for both dinner and breakfast was well thought out. All ingredients were fresh and extremely tasty. The wine list was excellent. Overall the staff were very helpful and attentive. Would definitely recommend and return.

Mother and daughter break. I have previously enjoyed Travelzoo deal breaks at the Carbis Bay Hotel, which I understand operates in conjunction with the Gannet Inn. This deal seemed like a good opportunity to revisit this lovely part of the country. Our stay at the Gannet Inn was excellent in every way.
