Set in 45 acres of tranquil woodland, Friars Carse Hotel is a country estate within the grounds of what was originally a 13th-century friary. This is an area steeped in history, and the bard Robert Burns spent much of his short but eventful life in the vicinity of Friars Carse -- even engraving lines with his diamond-point pen on the summer house windows. The stencil is now on display at Ellisland Farm Museum, which is just a short walk away.

Set on the banks of the River Nith, the hotel offers seasonal angling opportunities exclusively for hotel guests. There is also tackle storage, a drying room and freezing facilities on site.

The Whistle Restaurant uses seasonal produce and also offers an extensive wine list. It was here that a famous drinking competition took place, to win the right to be put into verse by Burns.

From the hotel, Sandyhills Beach is a 40-minute drive away, while Sweetheart Abbey is 20 minutes. Dundrennan Abbey, where Mary, Queen of Scots spent her final night in Scotland, and the moated triangular Caerlaverock Castle are both less than a 50-minute drive away.

With views across the well-maintained lawns that roll down to the riverfront, all bedrooms come with free Wi-Fi.

The food at dinner would benefit from a bit more care in terms of ingredients and care of presentation. Frozen chips and what seemed to be 'smash' potato with an excellent steak and kidney pudding took the edge off what could have been a great meal. Also the atmosphere in the dining room would benefit from looking at as its all very quiet and you feel like you have to talk in whispers. It was not a warm and inviting experience which lead us to eat out for 2 of our 3 night stay.
