From its humble beginnings as a vegetable farm and haven for backpackers, Chaa Creek is now lauded as “one of Belize's most prestigious eco-resorts” (Travel + Leisure).

Located at the foothills of Mayan mountains, near the border of Guatemala, the eco-friendly resort pays homage to the local culture and environment by marrying the land's natural beauty with man-made conveniences. The thatched-roof cottages, which serve as guest rooms, are kept naturally cool by the traditional adobe design. The lodge's rustic luxury is highlighted in the cottages' terra-cotta tile floors and Guatemalan textiles.

With a nature reserve, horseback riding, infinity pool, butterfly exhibit, hiking trails and a spa, the lodge supplies a range of activities to keep travelers engaged. Guests can commune with nature while hiking the medicinal trail or canoeing the Macal River where toucans, iguanas and monkeys can be spotted. The nearby caves and Mayan ruins provide even more to be discovered.

From the press:
  • "Chaa Creek has a powerful effect on everyone, with its simple pace and its natural setting, which allow visitors to stop and savor the sounds of the jungle, the gardens and their endless varieties of flowers and scents, and the night sky, loaded with stars" -- Travel + Leisure
  • "Service is very friendly and personable" -- Frommer's

I booked a treetop suite through Travelzoo in February 2018, but found out days before (only because I emailed them to confirm) that it was being remodeled, and not available. I don't understand why they wouldn't let me know this before. I had my heart set on it, and was very disappointed to not stay there. We did get upgraded to a room with A/C, which was nice. The bathroom had NO DOOR, which was really awkward-one person had to go outside to give the other privacy! The shower was all glass, and in view from the hot tub, so no privacy there either. We didn't mind that there was no TV, but there was also no music available. To contact the front office, you had to walk there, no phone in your room. LIkewise, the staff would knock on your door at anytime to ask you questions, etc-it felt invasive.

The onsite activities - extensive hiking trails, canoes, horses (that are really well taken care of and very well trained), butterfly center. The food in the restaurant was also excellent.

The pool was nice and clean and the food was delicious!!

The noise was quite disturbing and the compensation of 20% off on dinner bill when most of us did not even eat there was not very pleasant!!

The environment of the lodge itself is beautiful and so well-maintained.

The staff are so helpful and kind. The room was spacious, and we loved the double shower (I just wish it had A/C instead of fans, but we understood that we were in the jungle and they’re being eco-friendly). The food is delicious, but remember that it costs to eat there, unless you buy a package. I do think that the shuttle service into San Ignacio should be complimentary, because most guests will need it, and it’s not a long drive (they charge $30 US). We took advantage of several of the complimentary and paid activities that they offer, and we had a lovely stay. Would highly recommend!

Food at the restaurant was not our favorite. We recommend going to eat at nearby restaurants for authentic Belizean meals.
