Built in 1866 and later used as a shooting lodge, Riverdale Hall Hotel is in rural Northumberland. It's a short riverside walk from the market town of Bellingham, a well-known stop on the Pennine Way.

There are long walks that start and finish at Bellingham, making it the perfect place for a restorative cup of tea and cake (or a celebratory pint).

Northumberland National Park -- a "natural wonderland", according to Lonely Planet -- is a short drive away. Kielder Water and Forest Park, home to Northern Europe's largest artificial lake and England's largest forest, is around 25 minutes' drive away.

Hexham Abbey, in the market town of Hexham, and Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are both within 35 minutes' drive of the hotel. Cragside, the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity, is 45 minutes' drive away; this National Trust property was described as "a wonder of its age" by Jeremy Paxman in his book The Victorians.

The hotel restaurant serves dishes made with local produce such as lamb, game and cheeses. There is also a lounge with views of the River North Tyne, and a bar with open fires.

Facilities at the hotel include an indoor swimming pool and a sauna. You can also play on the hotel's cricket field or on the 18-hole golf course (fees apply). The hotel can help you to arrange mountain biking, canoeing, sailing or waterskiing in the area.

The River North Tyne, which runs by the hotel, is known for its salmon and trout, and guests can hire fishing equipment at an additional cost.

Rooms have free Wi-Fi and many have views across the grounds to the river.

The website said the pool was closed on a Wednesday afternoon until 5:30 but on arrival we were informed it was closed on a Tuesday afternoon until 6:30. So out of date website. We wanted to use the steam room and pool as we had just finished a long walk before arriving at the hotel. Steam room turned out to be a sauna!! Waited a long time to check in because of a problem with another customers booking. Also we should have been informed at check in how the sockets in the room worked so we could use the bedside lamps. We used the pool on Wednesday from 11:30. The changing facilities were disappointing, no separate cubicles, the floor was dirty and the sauna wasn't heated up. Whole area not inviting at all. Needs refurbishing.

Reception area needs upgrading--looking a bit tired and dated--could benefit from a refurb--otherwise not bad for it's rating.

Lack of soundproofing between rooms - could hear talking, light switches being used in room next door (my partner could also hear noises and he is hard of hearing!)

Country house full of character. Great staff, beautiful location, excellent value for money. 2 nights b&b with dinner on first night for this price is hard to beat. Recommended.
