The city of Basel sits on the Rhine River in northwest Switzerland, bordering France and Germany. And "with museums galore, a scenic setting on the Rhine and one of Europe's best winter carnivals, Basel makes an appealing stopover", says Lonely Planet. The Dorint An der Messe Basel hotel is in the business quarter, but catch the tram at the Musical-Theatre stop, a 5-minute walk from the hotel, and you'll be in the city centre in around 15 minutes. All guests are given a city travel pass from the hotel reception, which allows you to take the tram and bus for free.
Marktplatz, with its 16th-century town hall, is a must. It's in The Old Town (Grossbasel), also home to the Theatreplatz, which has an interesting water fountain made out of scrap metal. Don't miss Basler Münster (Cathedral) for its Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Art lovers should head to Kunstmuseum Basel, which houses the largest collection of art in Switzerland and is called a "miraculous balance of judgment and courage" by The Guardian.
For an all-round view of the city, take a Sunday Vintage Tram Tour from Centralbahnplatz and get an hour-long guided tour covering 2,000 years of the city's history.
Dorint An der Messe Basel hotel has an exercise room, and you can borrow dumbbells and steppers to use in the bedrooms free of charge. Free bike hire is also available.
All meals are served in the hotel restaurant, Côte Jardin; it's a choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurts and juices for breakfast, and Swiss and international dishes for dinner.
Bedrooms are cosy and modern, and have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.
