Overview

The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel is set in the North Devon countryside. The renovated coaching inn is surrounded by six acres of picturesque grounds, close to the Tarka Trail. The hotel's gardens extend down to the River Taw, and the property offers a 5-mile stretch of salmon and trout fishing. There's also an on-site fishing school.

Exeter, and Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks are all within easy reach by car, and it's a 25-minute drive to RHS Garden Rosemoor (open year round). Guests can try falconry, horse riding and shooting on site (charges apply), while DVD players and fishing equipment are available to hire (pre-booking advised).

The restaurant specialises in classic British cuisine using local Devon ingredients, and offers three local ciders and a number of real ales.

Rooms are spacious and feature antique French furniture. The rooms at the back overlook the garden with views of Heywood Forest and Eggesford Church. Pets and children are welcome (charges apply).

Friendly helpful team offering great service, Louis at checkin and dinner could not have been more efficient. Arron at breakfast ensured we had everything we needed. The food all weekend was fantastic, with a special mention for the steak and kidney puddings, the chefs are very talented in creating flavoursome dishes.

Many things but the main ones were the cost, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food.
Other Comments
There were many positives as stated previously ie. welcome and friendliness of staff, quality of food, ambience of hotel and cost of stay via Travelzoo offer. Unfortunately one area that spoiled our stay was the timeliness within the eating areas! 3+ hours for dinner on first evening was rather excessive even for a taster menu and almost an hour and a half for breakfast on first morning was also excessive. I feel compelled to also mention that we were charged for a bottle of wine which we did not have although it was instantly refunded when I noticed the error.

The standard of food for the meals that we had was very good
Other Comments
when we arrived we were not told that the boiler had broken down. this meant there was no oportunatity to freshen up before our meal. We had to go downstairs after 2 hours to find out about the boiler breakdown. A small oil fired heater was the only form of heating for a large room. we were given the option of using the shower in room 18, which was on a different floor and up a steep staircase. this room was designed for single occupancy and strongly smelt of damp. After spending a very cold night the following morning we had to walk to room 18 to shower and shave and dress. If we had been made aware of the problems with the boiler on arrival then we would have not stayed the night.

Other Comments
No hot water in bathroom hand basin for 24 hours. Friends room had no heating until next day. Items on breakfast and dinner menus not available. Beer pumps not working. In general poor organisation.
