The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel is a former coaching inn set in six acres of picturesque grounds in the North Devon countryside.

There are lots of walking routes nearby, including the Tarka Trail, the Two Moors Way and the South West Coast Path, and the hotel has maps and trails for guests to use.

The hotel's gardens extend down to the River Taw, and the property offers a 5-mile stretch of salmon and trout fishing. There's also an on-site fishing school. Guests can try falconry, horse riding and shooting on site (charges apply), while DVD players and fishing equipment are available to hire (supplements apply; pre-booking advised).

Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks are half an hour's drive away, as is the city of Exeter. It's a 25-minute drive to RHS Garden Rosemoor (open year round).

The restaurant specialises in classic British cuisine made using local Devon ingredients, and the bar offers three local ciders and a number of real ales.

Rooms are spacious and feature antique French furniture. The rooms at the back have views over the garden to Heywood Forest and Eggesford Church.

There was no atmosphere as the downstairs rooms were so big The seating arrangement in the bar did not cater for many people and we were left looking around for somewhere to go. The breakfast room was equally as big the tables were dotted around like little islands with a bit of thought it could be made to be less isolating. The staff were friendly but insular with one exception. Conversation was not encouraged by most of the staff. Our room was lovely but the bathroom was datedthe plumbing to the shower head was reversed, the sink cracked and black mold was evident in the shower area.

We were upgraded to the Eggesford Suite which had a huge four poster bed. A lovely big room with an excellent bathroom. The five course taster menu (we had the vegetarian one) was excellent. Breakfast was good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All in all a great stay.

Great 2 night break to unwind and explore the local area. Hotel has a great atmosphere and dining was excellent. Room was extremely spacious, clean, warm had everything we needed. Although recently decorated and refreshed, it was a little dated and slightly misaligned. Overall a great experience and good value for money.

Great hotel, good position, beautiful grounds. Everything was spacious and airy. Huge log fire to cosy up and enjoy a pre/post dinner drink. Dining was excellent. Lovely atmosphere created by tentative professional staff but in a relaxed manner.
