You arrive at Peckforton Castle via a long sweeping drive through the Gate House lodge and the forest before entering by way of a portcullis. The hotel is built in the style of a medieval castle and is surrounded by 4000 acres of forest. The Grade I-listed building was built in the 19th century and has featured in movies including "Robin Hood" and "Doctor Who".

Beeston Castle and Woodland Park, a former royal castle and part of English Heritage, is around a five minutes' drive away. The Ice Cream Farm, a family-friendly ice-cream parlour and adventure park is approximately 10 minutes' drive away.

The 1851 Restaurant has three AA Rosettes, and serves classical French and modern British cuisine. "Dining in the 1851 Restaurant is a memorable experience", according to The AA Hotel Guide, 2016. The 2010 Brasserie is more informal and is located in the former scullery of the castle and maintains original features including two cast-iron cooking ranges.

There are 48 bedrooms in total; all rooms are individually designed and combine many original features.

There are lots of facilities at the hotel including air rifle shooting, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting and Segways. If you're a petrol head, try the Land Rover experience, or for a more calming break, relax in the spa.

The location was beautiful as was the castle itself

They need to concentrate on the small things such as replacing toiletries and tea bags etc in the room on our 2nd day we had to ring down for them to be replaced, just a small thing but something that should be standard service in a hotel of this quality.

We were glad that we had booked at the Travelzoo rate. A few members of staff were quite attentive but on the whole the quality of the service was disappointing. We stood at the coffee bar waiting to order drinks with a member of staff's back to us as he was making coffee for someone else. A simple acknowledgement would have been fine. At dinner in the main restaurant we were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu only then to be forgotten about. Some 20 minutes later we had to ask again to see the menu. Cooked breakfast the following morning was lukewarm. A fellow guest on the next table complained that he and his wife had waited over 25 minutes for a bowl of porridge and eventually went to get a cooked breakfast as he did not want to wait any longer. By contrast the man who served us in the wine cellar was very pleasant and we were served very quickly. We felt that on the whole the quality of the service could have been better. A previous visit last year had been more impress
