Overview

Set on a 268-acre estate a 20-minute drive from Canterbury, Broome Park Hotel occupies a 17th-century stately home once owned by Lord Kitchener. The mansion house was built between 1635 and 1638, and was transformed into a country house hotel in the 1930s.

The private estate has an 18-hole, par-72 golf course designed by renowned golf architect Donald Steel. In the mansion house, you'll find the Kitchener Restaurant & Bar, which serves modern British dishes (many of the ingredients are sourced from producers in Kent) and daily afternoon tea. There's also a bar, a heated indoor pool, a sauna and a gym. Leisure facilities include squash and tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a snooker table.

Mansion Double Rooms have views over the landscaped gardens and the golf course, and are on the first or second floor (there is no lift). There is free Wi-Fi throughout.

The hotel is 10 miles from Canterbury and there's a regular bus service into the city centre from a stop at the end of the drive. This partially walled city features the ruins of a Norman castle and one of the oldest cathedrals in England. The cute coastal town of Whitstable is a 30-minute drive away, and you can reach Dover and Folkestone within 20 minutes.

Really lovely experience, rooms just getting a bit tired and need updating but didn’t spoil it for us.

The grounds were welcoming, as was the exterior of the hotel. The check in process was excellent, friendly and efficient. The room itself was dated and required refurbishment. The service at the bar during the afternoon was poor, and I had to go to reception to seek someone to serve drinks. The ice machine had broken, so no ice was available for drinks and the hotel was too short staffed for some to attend a local shop to collect some. The level of service during the evening meal was similarly poor, with the hotel evidently being short staffed. There were a number of tables left with dirty plates for the entirety of our meal. The food itself for the evening meal was very average - we had a better lunch at a local pub. If this meal had not been included in the package, we would have certainly complained about the quality and cost of this. The breakfast was a buffet breakfast and very nice. Overall, we would not be inclined to return, even on a package like the one we got.

Very nice time. However they do not have enough staff, the receptionist was also the waiter and barman. The food was good. Nice gin and tonic but no ice as the machine was broken. The room was big, bed comfortable, hot running water was a bit of an issue. The place is a bit tired if I am honest but for the money good value.

Only offered 6:30 or 7:45 for Dinner even though no one else came into the restaurant after 6:30 until 7:45 - don't understand why we couldn't do 7:00 or 7:30. Lacked a bit of atmosphere and music CD in restaurant kept getting stuck. Staff pleasant and helpful but could do with knowing what's on the menu before service starts. Breakfast Okay - Service could be slicker and plates need clearing before hot food arrives ! Rooms in the mansion are a great size, but a little tired especially the bathroom. A roaring fire at check- in would have been most welcoming in such an impressive entrance space. Overall good value DB&B, enjoyed our stay but more attention to detail would make a big difference.

very amusing in a Fawlty Towers way. Very cold as no central heating, staff running around as too many booked in for dinner, wine given without glasses, tea without milk jugs, everything so funny that there was a great bond in the dining room! Would go back with a group and a lot of alcohol. Fabulous walk round the grounds!
