Set on a 268-acre estate a 20-minute drive from Canterbury, Broome Park Hotel occupies a 17th-century stately home once owned by Lord Kitchener. The mansion house was built between 1635 and 1638, and was transformed into a country house hotel in the 1930s.

The private estate has an 18-hole, par-72 golf course designed by renowned golf architect Donald Steel. In the mansion house, you'll find the Kitchener Restaurant & Bar, which serves modern British dishes (many of the ingredients are sourced from producers in Kent) and daily afternoon tea. There's also a bar, a heated indoor pool, a sauna and a gym. Leisure facilities include squash and tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a snooker table.

Mansion Double Rooms have views over the landscaped gardens and the golf course, and are on the first or second floor (there is no lift). There is free Wi-Fi throughout.

The hotel is 10 miles from Canterbury and there's a regular bus service into the city centre from a stop at the end of the drive. This partially walled city features the ruins of a Norman castle and one of the oldest cathedrals in England. The cute coastal town of Whitstable is a 30-minute drive away, and you can reach Dover and Folkestone within 20 minutes.

In the Mansion itself, there are no bedrooms on the ground floor. Ours was on the first floor, a mini-apartment, great to relax in, but accessed by ascending 42 stairs, in multiples of six (no lift), which were ill-lit at night. (Being partially sighted, going to & from our room was a real effort, and felt risky!). The Reception staff (Tom especcially) and serving staff were friendly and courteous, but one got the impression there were too few of them (Finances "on the edge"?). There were several non-fumctioning light-bulbs in our rooms; and no stool at the dressing table...bad house-keeping? Finally, on returning home, we discovered that we had been charged for dinner on our second night, which was not in the deal we had booked (but, conversely, we were not charged for our bottle of wine at dinner on our first night!). On phoning to query this, neither of the relevant extensions answered. Overall, this being a magnificent Mansion, these shortcomings imply that its management is not on top of the job!

What a beautiful setting, what a cold hotel in the public areas! The service we received from the moment we arrived to when we left was nothing other than superb., as was the food. A lovely huge room, apartment really, if a tad cold. The hall and restaurant were both cold and in need of a little tlc but overall we enjoyed it very much.

Helpful staff, good food, beautiful location, but bedrooms furnished very minimal with only one bedside locker. Huge rooms, but tiny shower room .

The chef's cauliflower and stilton soup was amazing! The maintenance man, Ian, fixed the tv, helped us with the code to the room and when I moaned to my husband about not having ordinary teabags in the room, Ian later came up with a plateful for us! How very kind of him!

Fantastically historic building. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Our room (Charles II) was roomy and have everything we needed. Bed was super king size and very comfy. I guess the room, bathroom and furniture could be updated but it’s old fashionedness was in keeping with the building. Food in the restaurant was excellent. Particularly liked honey on the honeycomb at breakfast! Wished I had found time for a swim, maybe next time.
