Overview

The Swiss have a reputation for efficiency, and it’s hard to think of a more efficient way to see Basel -- Switzerland’s third largest city, with one of Europe’s best-preserved old towns -- than from this excellently placed hotel.

Set right by the main train station, Hotel Victoria is also just across the road from tram and bus stops, and guests to the city get free tram travel throughout their stay. Most visitors start their explorations of Basel in the nearby cobbled streets of the old town. The Marktplatz, dominated by a 16th-century town hall with vivid courtyard frescoes, makes a good reference point.

Back at the hotel, the bedrooms are big by European standards with free high-speed Wi-Fi -- go for one overlooking the interior courtyard to ensure a quiet night. Those upgrading to a suite will enjoy their own decadent chaises longue and Jacuzzi.

Le Train Bleu restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily until midnight, with traditional and regional Swiss dishes on the menu and an extensive salad bar. In the summer, there’s a pretty terrace for dining alfresco.

If you’re here in winter, the city reputedly has the biggest Christmas markets in Switzerland. The cheery stalls line Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz in the old town. What’s that everyone’s speaking? Probably Baseldytsch. Basel has it own distinct dialect -- but German, French and English are widely spoken, too.
