If hotels had feelings, The Gardens Hotel is the kind of place that would turn other properties green with envy. The secluded and lush former estate of botanical hobbyist Peggy Mills has been transformed from a turn-of-the-century manse into a luxurious 27-room boutique getaway.
Comprised of a main house and newer carriage-style houses, the verdant hideaway encourages exploration with winding brick pathways, rare flora and fauna and several one-ton, Cuba-imported, earthenware jars called tinajones.
Rooms are refined Colonial with imported mahogany furnishings, ornately carved Hemingway beds and breezy plantation fans overhead. If it wasn’t for the spacious marble baths with Jacuzzis and Tempur-Pedic mattresses, the rooms could be a step back in time to 100 years ago.
Stand-out amenities include a heated courtyard lagoon pool with an adjacent sitting gazebo, free Wi-Fi and a wine bar with the latest automated technology allowing for tasting of a partial or a full glass.
For a taste of Old Key West beyond the confines of the property, it’s a five-minute walk to bustling Duval Street and the sights and sounds of the area.
