Overview

Set on a 312-acre estate roamed by fallow deer, Buxted Park Hotel offers an upscale country house-style stay in rural East Sussex. This 4-AA-Red-Star lodging occupies a striking Palladian mansion dating from the 18th century, and has hosted suitably grand guests including William Wordsworth, Winston Churchill and Marlon Brando.

Glyndebourne, the renowned opera house, is a 20-minute drive away, while National Trust property Wakehurst Place -- an Elizabethan manor with ornamental gardens -- and Anne Boleyn's childhood home Hever Castle, are within 35 minutes' drive. The hilltop town of Rye, "often described as England's quaintest town… a little nugget of the past" (Lonely Planet), takes an hour to reach by car.

Ornate columns, intricate plasterwork and a gilt coat of arms decorate Buxted Park Hotel's grand lobby lounge. Guests can relax with coffee, cocktails and afternoon tea by the fireplace in the bar, which features high ceilings, chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows, and dine in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant. There's also a terrace overlooking the grounds.

Bedrooms are decorated in elegant style and have free Wi-Fi. Higher room categories have living space, DVD players and views of the grounds, while lavish suites with period accents include details such as coffee machines, fireplaces and 4-poster beds. Some bedrooms are in a garden wing.

You can add an afternoon tea with bubbly for two to your stay for just £35 instead of the usual £61.

We love this hotel! The (standard) rooms are not huge but are nicely furnished and sparkling clean. The staff cannot be faulted and the food is fabulous.

The grounds are what makes it truly special but all the staff are lovely and helpful.

I have taken a star off since we had some workers with a large noisy lift doing repair work right outside our room making noise and dust. No one mentioned this to us on arrival at the desk. However, I happened to mention it to someone on the staff in passing and she herself came back to offer us one of two other rooms. We appreciated her effort and moved upstairs to a different room. However, they really shouldn't have been booking out this room at all in my opinion. You couldn't have used the terrace anyway. I would be most careful before booking next time. Otherwise it's a great place. The dining/breakfast room is very claustraphobic and in my opinion unattractive. A shame they don't always use the Orangery.

The reception hall was drab and not inviting. It appears that the main function for Buxted Park Hotel is for weddings, above all else. The dining room has no windows. Considering the price to stay at BPH, the general appearance is tired. When checking out of the hotel, I was charged for drinks which I had not had the previous evening. The receptionist dealt with this and gave me a further discount.
