"The Hotel still has the feel of a traditional Hotel. Stayed with husband 16 year old son and elderly mother. It was a special occasion as I used to stay at the Hotel as a child at Christmas. Booked 2 rooms and paid for 4 adults. Hoped for a family room for myself husband and son and my Mum in another room, but a minimum requirement was two twin bedded rooms because of who would b sharing each. I stated this on the booking form for each room and contacted reservation and spoke to the Ops manager regarding these requests prior to our arrival, and assured they had been noted. On arrival, the receptionist was not aware of our requests as had not been noted even though on both bookings via Travel Zoo and contacted Hotel direct 3 times - and it was difficult to reallocate due to Hotel being quite full. Caused delay and annoying as had contacted Hotel 3 times pre-arrival. Mine and my mothers room had a few niggly issues which were partly sorted quickly. Loo would not flush (fixed promptly). Bathroom door difficult to open once closed (awaiting new handle). Window catch broken and loo type paper wedged around it to stop draught, wouldn't have that room again. The room though was warm, quiet and clean and the bed comfy. Restaurant food - three-course meal and breakfast was very good. Prefer pots of ea served to table fo breakfast rather than mug and urn but asked the waiter and happily did that for me. Good selections and plenty. Waiting staff excellent. Car parking good."

Overview

Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton is a grand old seaside hotel with well-tended gardens and impressive views of the coastline and the Isle of Wight. The hotel is on East Cliff, a 5-minute walk along a zigzag path from Bournemouth's 7-mile-long beach.

The hotel is 15 minutes' walk along the waterfront from Bournemouth Pier and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, where you can see humboldt penguins, green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks, among other species. Bournemouth's railway station and high-street shops are 15 minutes' walk away.

The New Forest is 20 minutes' drive away. This 220-square-mile national park is home to ponies and deer, and has many walking, cycle and nature trails to explore. We recommend the deer-viewing platform at Bolderwood, around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel; three circular walks start at the car park and visitor centre there.

Frederick's, the hotel's restaurant, serves traditional British dishes in an impressive high-ceilinged dining room with sea views. There's also a lounge for light bites and afternoon tea, and a club-style bar. Other facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a gym.

Rooms are spacious and have traditional décor. Feature/View Rooms have sea views. Wi-Fi is free.

Back and side doors constantly open making Foyer and ground floor cold. Wasteful and unpleasant. Automatic doors obviously need adjusting.

We had a disabled person in our party and asked to avoid stairs. We were given rooms which even after using the lift we had to negotiate a flight of stairs.

The Carlton hotel is an ideal location for visiting the town, beach and any other ambition that takes you there. The hotel is very clean and well looked after, though a bit dated. Our room was big, warm and clean. Some attention was needed in the bathroom which contained a separate bath and shower. The indoor pool was small but warm and tidy. The restaraunt was ok with an attentive staff. The food was good. We were on a deal and the menu limited. The staff made sure we got what we wanted anyway. Overall a nice experience. We would go back.
