Why We Love It

  • The 4-star Georgian property is set in 32 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens
  • Former US President Bill Clinton, Will Ferrell, Jude Law and Tommy Hilfiger have stayed at the hotel
  • Londonderry centre is a 10-minute drive away
  • The Sperrin Mountains are 35 minutes' drive away; the Giant's Causeway takes about an hour

The family-run Beech Hill Country House Hotel occupies a Georgian property built in 1729, and is set in woodland filled with ponds and waterfalls. Among the hotel's previous guests are A-list celebrities and politicians including Bill Clinton, Will Ferrell, Jude Law and Tommy Hilfiger.

Used as a base by the US Marines in World War II, the hotel has a World War II archive and a memorial to the Marine Corps.

There's a lot to explore in the local area -- Londonderry, which is described as a "artistic and cultural hub", with a "splendid riverside setting", is less than 10 minutes' drive. The River Foyle, which has excellent fishing and some of the best oyster beds in the UK, is 20 minutes' drive away. It's also an excellent wildlife-spotting destination -- you might see dolphins and seals, or huge flocks of migrating birds.

The Sperrin Mountains -- Northern Ireland's largest mountain range, with undulating hills, quiet valleys, boggy uplands and richly diverse wildlife -- are a 35-minute drive away. The Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just over an hour's drive away.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the hotel's "imposing 1729 building, surrounded by the beech trees that gave it its name, has all the grace and exquisite proportions you associate with the Georgian era". Heritage Rooms have antique furnishings, and some have views of the garden. Superior Rooms are in the original house or the modern wing, and have garden views.

The Ardmore Restaurant sources local products from nearby farms and local fishermen. Vegetables and herbs are gathered daily from the hotel's garden.

Golfing, horse riding, hill walking and other activities can be arranged by the hotel for a supplement.

Loved the history of Beech Hill! Built 1729 and a lot of the house still the original. The US Marines where based at the house during the Second World War. The Interior and exterior is listed. Beautiful grounds and a vet handy location to Londonderry/Derry. Very relaxed atmosphere and great service.

Brenda and Ashleigh looked after us very well including a quick view of the original family chapel and the suite in which President Clinton has stayed. He has been there four times in total to date. Treat yourself to a stay.

We enjoyed our stay in the Beech Hill Country House Hotel in its delightful wooded setting, that gave ample scope for walks along the trails in the grounds.
Other Comments
The hotel was small enough to give guests more personal attention. All staff we encountered were exceptionally helpful and pleasant. The rooms in the new extension were very pleasant whilst the rooms in the main house were more individual.
