The AA Hotel Guide 2019 describes the "popular" 3-star Best Western Mayfield House Hotel as having "an ideal location for exploring the many attractions that Wiltshire and the Cotswolds have to offer". The property, which is in the Avon Valley village of Crudwell, is within 15 minutes' drive of Tetbury and Malmesbury -- two of the Cotswolds' prettiest towns.
This area is home to 140 lakes; local activities include wakeboarding, sailing, cycling, fishing and horse riding. Cotswold Water Park is a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Bath and Bristol are both around 45 minutes away by car.
There are lots of walking routes in the area, including the 102-mile Cotswold Way, which is a 30-minute drive from the hotel. The White Horse Trail, a 50-minute drive away, is popular with families and dog walkers. It comprises eight smaller walks adding up to a 90-mile journey that passes eight white horses cut into the chalk hills.
According to The AA Hotel Guide 2019, guests can "relax with a drink in the comfortable lounge area, where orders are taken for the carefully prepared dinner to follow". The restaurant uses seasonal locally sourced food.
There are 28 bedrooms, including Standard and Superior (Courtyard and Gardenside rooms). Some bedrooms are on the ground floor of a cottage across from the main building. Wi-Fi is free.

Whilst on the surface, this hotel may look a little tired, it really didn't have any impact on our stay. The room (a superior that we paid an additional GBP10 per night to upgrade to) was quite large with dual aspect windows and the en-suite was enormous. The hotel was very well heated too and the bed was very comfortable after a hard day sightseeing. The most pleasing thing about the hotel was that on the walk from the car park to reception, you have to walk past the kitchen and can see in. We had a little snoop to check it out and it was so clean and well organised, we decided to have dinner there that night. That was not a bad decision as the food was delicious and the portions very large with home made bread as well. The cooked breakfast was great too. It was definitely worth the GBP60 per room per night and we look forward to staying there again.

The hotel was in a good position to visit some great places.

We were a party of 7 returning for the 2nd time, 3rd for some of us. It's location is great giving access to so many of the delightful tourist towns and villages.
We were made very welcome by the whole team and nothing was too much trouble. Fab food both at breakfast and dinner time in the relaxed atmosphere of the dining room. The wine offer was very welcome too!

Sian went above and beyond making us feel very welcome and providing us with some much needed refreshments that we could not obtain in the pub 'next door'!

It was nice to be out of the hustle and bustle of busy towns, cities and touristy villages. Our room was in a cottage adjacent to the main building. Room was large and bathroom had bath and shower. Room, corridor and stairs all very dingy and cramped. Room did not appear to have been refurbished since the 1970s or 80s although it did have a new carpet. Bathroom was extremely cramped and with a mismatched suite - cream sink and loo, white shower tray and loo seat! Found a foreign body on the loo on arrival. Although the room was not otherwise dirty, the gloomy aspect and shabby decor / furniture made it appear so. No vegetarian main course on the sample dinner menu in reception, so we ate elsewhere in the evening.

The welcome on arrival left something to be desired but was acceptable. what was not acceptable was the promotional offer of a pizza cooked in the wood burning pizza oven in the hotel garden for £10 each. Looked good, so we booked but, when we went to eat, we were told that the oven had not been lit as we were the only customer and we would be served pizzas cooked in the kitchen. When these arrived they were oddly shaped , very thin with not much topping. When tasted, the nearest description would be dry cardboard! Both were sent back to the kitchen and we ordered a different dish which was very good. However, when we came to pay the bill, £20 for the rejected pizzas was being charged in addition to the alternate meal. Naturally, we protested and the item was removed without delay. However, a man who was working on a computer in the reception area, I assumed he was the manager, began to argue that the pizzas had been enjoyed by other customers in a quite aggressive manner. As there were no other customers in the dining room when we rejected the pizzas this did seem a futile argument which we ignored! This was the only meal we had in the hotel, except breakfast which was excellent. Anyone staying at the Best Western Mayfield House Hotel should avoid the pizza offer. A short walk away is the Potting Shed restaurant which is excellent in terms of ambience, service and food although it is a little expensive but worth it. Finally, if you are considering booking the Mayfield House Hotel, don't.
