The AA Hotel Guide 2015 praises The Inn at Hawnby's "charming" atmosphere, "attentive and friendly" service and "delicious, home-cooked meals". This cosy bolthole on the North York Moors is an award-winning inn offering stunning views, seasonal menus and local ales by a cosy fire.

The location of the hotel is a walkers’ dream -- the Lonely Planet describes the North York Moors as having “some of the most spectacular views you'll see in the north of England”. In addition to rambling routes accessible from the doorstep, the hotel is less than 15 minutes' drive from the medieval ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and the Baroque mansion of Duncombe Park.

For a day trip, the historic city of York and the pretty seaside town of Whitby are both around an hour by car. Keldy Castle is a 40-minute drive and Thirsk Racecourse is less than half an hour away.

The property is home to the AA-Rosette-awarded Mexborough Room, where you can sample the seasonal menu in the restaurant or on the terrace, while soaking up views over the gardens and surrounding countryside. Produce is sourced locally where possible, from Murton Bank pigeon and Yorkshire haslet to English cheeses accompanied by a tankard of port. The bar also serves up traditional pub fare, with a fish and chip night each Friday.

The cosy bar has a selection of fine wines, but the real highlight is the variety of local ales, including Black Sheep, Arden Ale and their own Hawnby Hops.

Once you’ve had your fill, there are nine bedrooms to choose from – six in the main inn and three in the converted stable annex across the road. All rooms are furnished in a cosy country style, with ensuite bathrooms, TVs and complimentary Hawnby spring water. During term time it's best to arrive before 2pm, when reception closes for a few hours while the owners pick up their kids from school.

The evening meal was ok albeit very expensive. The Full English Breakfast was a joke. (Only one sausage which tasted a bit off)
Other Comments
Our room door did not lock properly. The skylight in the bathroom leaked when it rained. The remote control for the television did not work. We agree compensation but this has never been paid. Despite several emails and attempted phone calls I have not been able to contact them again to chase the compensation

Food was very good

Difficulty of finding the hotel, no lighting on car park and lack of atmosphere...we were the only two people in the bar who took the only comfy seats...a settee and one armchair in bar, all the other seating was table and hard chairs and bench. Not a place to relax, it seemed other guests had taken to their rooms. Dodgy electrical extensions in bedroom.

Front of House staff making inappropriate comments to back of house staff in hearing distance as we informed them we had waited over 55 minutes for a main course - so we found this really bad as it is not nice to hear that customers are not going to be seen again once their stay is completed. This lost them a substantial tip for all staff.

Good food and a very friendly host

The decor was a bit tired and our accommodation, which was separate from the hotel, was ready for a refurbishment. It is in a remote location.

Beautiful setting, peaceful and homely. Food was exceptional and full of flavour. Wine was reasonably priced and very good. Staff were very helpful. And almost no passing traffic, wonderful.

Cosy, quiet, friendly, great food, good wine, comfy bed. For us perfect. Bare in mind though that this is a three hundred year old inn. It's immaculately clean but remember it is old so don't expect premier inn style newness. But we wouldn't want to go to a premier inn.

Other Comments
The room in the stables annexe was very disappointing - very basic, no wifi,tv remote barely working, bathroom door jamming , shower door had to be wrestled with and both taps kept dripping.
