"Langley Castle is set in a beautiful location and is a fabulous 14th century medieval building. We were on honeymooon there for a couple of days and had made staff aware of this beforehand. However there were no special touches or congratulations and I felt that the staff lacked the 5 star customer service skills one would expect at such a venue. I work in the tourist industry and would know good customer service and bad. Langley Castle has the potential to be a fantastic hotel if staff had a bit more training and just went that extra mile."

Overview

Looking like something out of a fairy tale, Langley Castle is a true medieval castle, complete with castellated turrets, stained glass and resident peacocks. The property was built in 1350 and, after years of neglect, was sympathetically restored in the 19th century by a local historian and his wife. Now Grade-I listed, it is "England's only medieval fortified castle to welcome paying guests" (Frommer's) and makes for a truly unique stay.

The Feature Castle Rooms in the main building are something special with 7-foot walls, 4-poster beds and a spa bath or private sauna in the bathrooms. Standard rooms aren't located in the castle itself, but do overlook it and are furnished in baronial style, with canopy beds and plenty of drapes. Castle View Suites in the coach house are perfect for families, with curtains to divide the bed from the living space and a separate sofa bed for the kids.

In the mornings, the continental buffet is supplemented by cooked-to-order hot dishes, such as a full Scottish breakfast or eggs Benedict. Not to be missed shortly after is the free daily battlement tour around the grounds. Further afield, Hadrian’s Wall is only 15 minutes' drive north and the Homesteads Roman Fort Museum, where 800 troops were once stationed, is also nearby. For more modern culture, drive 40 minutes east to Newcastle, "the hipster capital of the northeast" (Lonely Planet).

Come nightfall, the 2-AA-Rosette Josephine Restaurant turns to fine dining, with a regularly changing 5-course set menu that features dishes such as pork loin with dauphinoise potatoes and cider cream. Don't fancy dressing up for dinner? Try the intimate Pavilion Grill, set in the modern glass-walled dining room overlooking the castle, where there's a choice of four different cuts of steak. High tea is served daily from 2-5.30pm, and scones, jam and cream are available at any time.

Fantastic room but access is very difficult because of the many stairs. Some of the male servers could do with further customer service training however all the female staff were friendly and efficient and attentive. The food was exemplary
