Overview

Waterhead Hotel sits in gardens on the edge of Coniston Water and boasts panoramic views of the Coniston Fells, making it a great base from which to explore the local area. You can take to the trails, or hop on a launch for a lake cruise.

Coniston's copper-mining past is evident in the remains of shafts and mines dotted around the area, but it also has a strong cultural heritage. Writer John Ruskin lived in Coniston, Tennyson honeymooned in the village and Turner painted the mountainous scenery. Author Arthur Ransome also holidayed as a child in Coniston, and used the area as the setting for his Swallows and Amazons book series.

The hotel is around 10 minutes' walk from Coniston Village, where you can visit the Ruskin Museum or see Hoathwaite Farmhouse, a 400-year-old Grade II-listed property that was recently restored by The National Trust. Tarn Hows -- part of an estate once owned by Beatrix Potter -- is a 40-minute walk away. Windermere is a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

You can begin the day with a full Cumbrian breakfast at the hotel restaurant, which serves local produce and has views of the Old Man of Coniston, a fell that's over 2000 feet high. There is also a Lounge Bar that stocks local ales.

The food was good

The room was not very good .There was no towel rail or toilet roll holder. The bath was badly worn and the shower needed replacing .The paint on the radiators was cracked .Our room was an upgrade because of a problem in the room that we should have which would have been in an annexe. Is it customary to give Travel Zoo cusomers the poorest rooms?

Very friendly staff. We were upgraded to a lake view room which was very spacious and nicely decorated. Also as part of our deal had dinner and breakfast included both of which were very nice.

Breakfast was disappointing. Poor selection of food overall and cooked breakfast could be better. Some of the staff got the timings wrong when serving. Coffee was poor quality.

More choice on the menu, would encourage people to dine in instead of out. Draught beers Morning papers Our bed was 2 old divan beds together which I could feel the springs. A comfortable bed is a must.
