"Luxury, history, quality of service, and cooking" (The Daily Telegraph) characterise the Relais & Chateaux Hotel Heritage, a "sumptuous" (Fodor's) family-run lodging in the heart of Bruges. Set on a quaint cobblestone street, the hotel occupies an imposing former townhouse renovated in the 19th century. It's a short stroll from Markt, Bruges's main square and home to its landmark Belfry -- a medieval bell tower whose summit offers panoramic city views. The picturesque canals, the Groeningemuseum, home to a noted collection of Flemish art, and the City Hall, with its ornate Gothic façade, are all within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. Brouwerij De Halve Maan, which provides guided brewery tours and tastings, is approximately 15 minutes' walk from the hotel.
The public spaces of the property reflect its period origins, and include a stately lounge with plush sofas, chandeliers and a marble fireplace; and a wood-panelled bar with leather banquettes. Guests can dine on regional and international dishes in the red-toned restaurant where ornate painted ceilings, gilt-edged doorways and richly patterned drapes create a "delightfully grand" (The Daily Telegraph) atmosphere. There's a rooftop sundeck, as well as a fitness room, a sauna and a steam room housed in the hotel's 14th-century cellar.
The "elegant" guestrooms are "in keeping with the building's heritage" (Fodor's), featuring fabrics in reds and golds, along with antique-style furnishings. Wi-Fi is free and there are iPads in all rooms. Some suites have views of the city.
