Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which boasts a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards at an extra cost.

There are three dining options at this hotel. The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

Great staff and location. Shame about the building works but it has to be done sometime. It didn't spoil our stay but would question whether the hotel is worth 4 stars.

For a 4 star rated 2AA rosette restaurant we thought the food was poor to average.

Without the new extension and more modernisation of existing rooms the hotel's location would be stunning.

After You had processed our reservation, you informed us that building work would be in progress "which would not inconvenience guests!"........this was the understatement of the year as A] a major construction on the beach directly in front of the hotel terrace, has been ongoing for some consderable time and is far from complete B] construction vehicles were everywhere, obstructing access to the hotel and beach,C] all day noise and dust from construction machinery. Furthermore the hotel car parking space was completely inadequate for guests' vehicles. Room 114 which was allocated to us, was not fit for purpose - no A/C, no room 'frig, and situated adjacent to the hotel kitchen roof with a ventilator blasting noisily from 7.30am until 3.30am - making sleep virtually impossible with the window open [ necessary with the ambient temperaure peaking at 29 degC. The staff coped with guests' complaints very calmly and politely. What should have been a couple of nights stay in a beautiful setting was spoiled by dishonest advertising on your part.

The location. The friendly staff
Other Comments
The only negatives are that there were two weddings at the hotel that day and parking was horrendous. The only other one was that the cooked breakfast was a little sparse. Only one mushroom and one tomato on the plate.
