Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894 and is perched on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach, which is currently part of a project to extend the hotel. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which boasts a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards at an extra cost.

There are three dining options at this hotel. The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. The South West Coast Path runs past the front of the hotel, and offers a leisurely walk into the town. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

  • "There aren't many spas in the UK where you can sit in a sauna and watch a pod of dolphins swim across a bay, but this is one of them" -- The Good Spa Guide

Being moved from the main hotel to one of the holiday cottages.... see below !!

The frontage of the hotel is a building site as they are building some beach front lodges... excavators, dumpers and large trucks coming and going from 800am until around 5.00pm. This will continue for many months by the look of it...

Lots of building work was going on providing more top class accommodation right on the beach so although a inconvenient at the moment with dust etc it will be interesting to see the finished result

Mature blonde lady on reception was trying to be accommodating.

have visited this hotel several times but this time certain points really let it down... Room not ready until after 4pm Very cold conservatory was the only area to sit in while waiting for room, all the guests had their coats on! (lady from reception did offer us a complimentary cup of tea).. Only choice of dinner time was 6.30pm or 8.45pm. Food was mediocre (having been very good on previous visits) & staff impersonal & 'robotic'. Appeared to be no heating on in the dining room & most guests had coats on while eating & one woman even kept her scarf on! Bathroom very cold with only heated towel rail for warmth. Dining room was miraculously warm for breakfast.. Just felt a bit disappointed as it was my husband's birthday & we were looking forward to returning to the hotel as other occasions had been good.
