Why We Love It

  • The luxury spa boasts a Good Spa Guide 5-bubble rating, and the hotel holds a VisitEngland Silver Award

Overview

Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach (there is construction taking place, on the far end of the beach). The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which boasts a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards for an extra cost.

The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

Disappointed with room. No views of garden. Next to noisy pump for swimming pool operating 7.00am to 10.00pm. Bathroom clean but needed refurbishment.

Lovely location with fabulous views across the see.

I think you need to be careful with the rooms here - unfortunately we had a room that had the kitchen industrial fan under it which was noisy until 10pm at night and then started up again at 7am - you could hear this whether the windows were open or closed. I'd suggest phoning first. The room had nice sea views.

The location and views were fantastic, and the evening meal was excellent after we paid FOR AN UPGRADE..
Other Comments
The menu we booked through Travelzoo had been changed about 3 weeks before we arrived and what was shown was not what we liked so we had to upgrade for the menu we wanted. ended up paying about an extra £18. No one had told us about this until we walked into the restaurant. Had a superior room but was not very big, especially when sitting on the toilet my knees were touching the wall.

We were shown 3 rooms none of which looked like the one we booked? And they said we were upgraded? Really?! Other than that the food was amazing and the staff were really helpful but hotel looking tired?

Other Comments
We were not advised at time of booking that the building works in front of the hotel had been going on since 2015 and it doesn't look anywhere near finished. The hotel could do with a spruce up, its grubby in places.
