The 4-star Hallmark Hotel Cambridge is set in 200 acres of Cambridgeshire countryside, and is in an ideal base to explore the area. Cambridge, described by Lonely Planet as "abounding with exquisite architecture, oozing history and tradition", is 15 minutes’ drive from the hotel.

Newmarket Racecourse, with a heritage dating back to the 17th century, is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. The Imperial War Museum Duxford -- Europe's leading aviation museum, housing a remarkable collection of 180 aircraft from Europe and the United States -- is also 20 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The hotel has a leisure club with a swimming pool, a steam room, a sauna and a gym. The hotel also has an 18-hole golf course and tennis courts.

The hotel's Brasserie restaurant uses seasonal, local ingredients and serves dishes inspired by classic British favourites. We like the sound of the chicken breast with baby onions, woodland mushrooms, creamed mash, and honey and cider sauce, and the Cambridge vanilla cream with shortbread biscuit. The hotel also has a garden and a terrace area.

"The contemporary-style bedrooms are smartly decorated and equipped with a good range of useful facilities," says The AA Hotel Guide 2016. There is free Wi-Fi, and 24-hour room service is available. Well-behaved dogs are also allowed at the hotel (supplements apply).

Disgusted with the cleanliness and food really bad and still waiting for explanation from Operations Manager, there was wee down the front of the toilet and mould round the toilet and sink.

Staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. Food in restaurant although limited in choice was very good. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The arrangements for golf were very good and the staff there also very helpful.

The hotel has recently been taken over by Hallmark and obviously requires a revamp. Some furnishings verging on shabby.

Very underwhelming menu (we were celebrating a birthday) and food not worthy of the charges: prawn/crayfish cocktail looked like could've got from Lidl or audi and not much of it for £6.50 a head. Dish of the day lamb shank £17.95 was quite bland and too expensive. Room was not what would expect for an executive room, very plain and expected it to be more attractive - we hated to think what normal rooms are like so in all, for the cost we have stayed in more attractive hotels. It is a little overpriced. Tea at breakfast the worse I have experienced in a hotel - like dishwater but discovered is because only one teabag in pot. At the meal a lady jumped up and exclaimed at something found in her dinner which was also unfortunate to witness.
