Located on a headland between Fistral Beach and the picturesque Gannel estuary, the Pentire Hotel in Newquay is a 10-minute stroll from one of the UK's most popular surfing spots and only five minutes' drive from the centre of town and the railway station.

With the South West Coast Path a 5-minute walk away, the hotel provides an ideal base from which to explore the local area on foot. The Blue Reef Aquarium and Newquay Zoo -- praised by The Daily Telegraph as "one of Britain's best zoos" -- are both within 10 minutes' drive of the hotel. Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps (for spectacular views of its giant sea stacks) and the picturesque fishing town of Padstow, made famous by Rick Stein's seafood empire, are both 25 minutes' drive. Further afield, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are around 40 minutes' drive.

The hotel has a fitness studio offering pilates, yoga and qi gong classes (at a supplement) and a fitness suite which is free for guests to use. There is also an aromatherapy steam room and a heated indoor swimming pool, as well as a beauty treatment centre, and a games room with pool and table tennis. The restaurant uses fresh local produce, and the Dunes bar serves local beers and ciders. The bar's outdoor sun terrace looks on to the garden, where there is a children's play area.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Standard Double rooms have countryside views. Upgrade to an Ocean Facing Double room for views of Fistral Bay. Dogs are welcome for a £10-per-night supplement.

Slightly tired, although clean, rooms obviously had not been checked after the last guest as an item of clothing was left on the floor. Breakfast was disorganised, possibly through lack of staff

The afternoon tea was excellent. Good views of Fistral beach from upgraded sea view rooms. Nice friendly staff. Excellent musician one evening. Children enjoyed the pool. Good value for money with Travelzoo and the supplement we paid direct for family room which means we didn't complain about room issues. Wouldn't have been happy at full rack price though.
Other Comments
Rooms definitely need upgrading and cleanliness wasn't great with two badly stained sheets, dried wee smelling top child's bunk bed, stains down bathroom door, broken weak flowing shower, broken loo seat, remote controls with no battery cover or with blue medical plaster holding it on, filthy and noisy air vent over shower and worn bathroom lino, rusty loo and towel rail. The mattress was very uncomfortable and noisy and every spring dug into me. A thick topper would have helped if new mattress can't be afforded. It wouldn't take much cost to rectify most of these basic issues and then make it a great hotel.
