Dumbleton Hall Hotel is a Grade II-listed manor house set in 19 acres of private grounds bordered by woodland. The present building sits on the site of the original 16th-century house, and once hosted the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and the poet John Betjeman, who is reputed to have written three poems here. We visited the property and loved the stunning views of the Vale of Evesham and the surrounding Cotswold countryside.

The ancient market town of Winchcombe, which has quaint shops, pubs and tea rooms, and is on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, is 10 minutes' drive away. The ruins of 13th-century Hailes Abbey, where you can follow an audio tour or visit the museum, are within a 15-minute drive. You can also visit Tewkesbury -- a 20-minute drive away -- to see the medieval buildings and narrow alleyways that surround the Benedictine abbey.

Cheltenham, Stratford-upon-Avon and Batsford Arboretum, a 56-acre botanical garden with one of the largest collections of trees and shrubs in England, are around 30 minutes' drive away. Gloucester, with its 11th-century cathedral, is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Dinner and Sunday lunch are served in The Cedar Tree Restaurant, which has an extensive wine list. Afternoon tea, coffee and bar snacks are available in The Olive Lounge, and drinks are served in The Library Bar and Lounge.

Bedrooms vary in size and character, but all have views of the gardens or the Vale of Evesham. Dogs are welcome, but not in the public rooms (fees apply; see policies for details).

Excellent stay. However, the Standard Room was rather tired and dated. Also, there were a few small issues with our evening meal (other diners who had ordered after us were served prior to us and it required me calling over the waiter to point this out, although the waiter then put it right immediately); also there was confusion over our pre-paid meals when it came to check-out the next day (again, it was sorted swiftly once we highlighted the issue, but it was a shame that we had to do so in the first place). Nonetheless, the staff were all excellent and friendly, and we enjoyed out stay in spite of the little niggles detailed above (these are pointed out more to help the hotel than as a complaint).

Everything great except the room. It was small with tv way up the wall and could only watch it on the bed. Only one chair, no room for another. Main problem was very draughty window so had to keep curtains drawn to stop the fraught. Very clean and bathroom lovely.

Lovely grounds, room satisfactory. Restaurant could be better managed, minor niggles. Charged us twice for dinner, soon rectified, but just as well we checked the bill.

There was only one thing I feel needs looking at and that’s the time it took to get your food. I know it was cooked to order, but the wait was longer than I expected. Sometimes the food wasn’t always as hot as I would have liked and the presentation of some dishes in the evening weren’t good. ( The plaice dish in particular I did like it at all) This hasn’t stopped me from going back as it was a beautiful place.
