Why We Love This Hotel

  • This 19th-century manor sits in 19 acres of grounds with a private lake
  • The property is on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to Dumbleton and Winchcombe
  • Nearby towns include Stratford-upon-Avon, Tewkesbury and Evesham
  • We visited the hotel, and loved the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views

"We loved the hotel and surrounding villages . The food was excellent , such a surprise we didn’t expect it to be so special and different as we stated two nights . It was our 50 th wedding anniversary and we had gone away just the two of us . We loved it and will certainly go back many times when the offers are on and take friends ."

Dumbleton Hall Hotel is a Grade II-listed manor house set in 19 acres of private grounds bordered by woodland. The present building sits on the site of the original 16th-century house, and once hosted the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and the poet John Betjeman, who is reputed to have written three poems here. We visited the property and loved the stunning views of the Vale of Evesham and the surrounding Cotswold countryside.

The ancient market town of Winchcombe, which has quaint shops, pubs and tea rooms, and is on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, is 10 minutes' drive away. The ruins of 13th-century Hailes Abbey, where you can follow an audio tour or visit the museum, are within a 15-minute drive. You can also visit Tewkesbury -- a 20-minute drive away -- to see the medieval buildings and narrow alleyways that surround the Benedictine abbey.

Cheltenham, Stratford-upon-Avon and Batsford Arboretum, a 56-acre botanical garden with one of the largest collections of trees and shrubs in England, are around 30 minutes' drive away. Gloucester, with its 11th-century cathedral, is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Dinner and Sunday lunch are served in The Cedar Tree Restaurant, which has an extensive wine list. Afternoon tea, coffee and bar snacks are available in The Olive Lounge, and drinks are served in The Library Bar and Lounge.

Bedrooms vary in size and character, but all have views of the gardens or the Vale of Evesham. Dogs are welcome, but not in the public rooms (fees apply; see policies for details).

Location. Very clean comfortable room. Excellent breakfast. Lovely hotel.

A three course meal was included in the deal. Unfortunately, the food served was nothing special. The service on Thursday 14th February was extremely slow (took 90 minutes to serve). We took the view that the meal was to be endured rather than to be enjoyed. This was not the fault of the waiting staff. Perhaps the hotel had booked too many people in for the evening meal.

Wasn’t impressed by all the dog poo by the lake but that’s down to lazy owners!

A nice, friendly, relaxed approach from the staff and the location was stunning!

Just a couple of areas that could be improved are, sometimes a lack of adequate staff at busy periods. Normally is rectified in time but not before people have been waiting too long. Unfortunately my Prawn Cocktail starter was pretty poor. Minuscule prawns and not enough Marie Rose sauce and way too much padding out with lettuce. The rest of the meal was great though although I think a £4.95 supplement for a modest cheese board is too much. Generally though a lovely building in a gorgeous location with caring staff. Thank you!

The building itself was beautiful and the staff were really friendly and helpful. Just walking into the reception to be met with a roaring log fire was lovely too.
