Why We Love It

  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Located in the heart of historic Fell's Point
  • There's a shuttle to the National Aquarium and other nearby destinations
  • This charming (and possibly haunted) inn regularly hosts free ghost tours

Surrounded by the cobblestone streets of Fell's Point, Admiral Fell Inn is a spirited place, to say the least. Parts of this historic inn date back to 1770 and, according to USA Today's, it's one of the top haunted hotels in the country.

Rooms are named after notable Baltimore residents and are uniquely furnished in traditional old-world European style, but updated with flat-panel TVs. Since the building housing the inn is over a century old, all rooms have a slightly different layout, but each of the hotel's 80 rooms and suites has a view of the courtyard, the harbor or Shakespeare Street. There's a nightly $9.95 resort fee, which also includes in-room bottled water, access to a nearby fitness center and shuttle service to the hotel’s sister properties and other destinations around the Inner Harbor.

For dinner and drinks, on-site options include 8 Ball Meatball, Points South Latin Kitchen offering Spanish-style small plates and Tavern at the Admiral pub, which also dates back to the late 1700s.

From the press:
  • “Updated and expanded over the years, this charming inn sits just across Thames Street from the harbor in the heart of the Fell's Point Historic District” – Frommer’s
  • “By joining together buildings constructed between the late 1770s and the 1920s, the owners created a structure that resembles a small, European-style hotel, with lots of character and quirks” – Fodor’s

The room, 344, was less than adequate. In seeing other rooms, it was probably not the usual. Shower head had little water coming out, was coming from broken faucet mostly.

The location and complementary bottle of wine were lovely. The front desk staff was extremely helpful and firendly. The housekeeping staff only supplied one bar of soap for the bathroom and we had to move it back and forth between the sink for hand washing and to the tub to use it in the shower. We have never only had a single bar of soap anywhere before. (Also no shower cap included with bathing supplies.) By the way, the room did include wine glasses - but they were filthy and we had to rewash them before using them.

Our package included a buffet breakfast on Sunday morning until noon. We arrived at 10:15 and the chafing dishes with the main, hot foods were all empty except for five slices of potatoes. We were told that they would all be filled shortly. After waiting a half hour for scrambled eggs to appear - and they had not, the attendant finally said that she could make them for us at her omelet station. So I ordered them. Another attendant finally showed up with a small amount of bacon for the chafing dish. I was able to grab a few slices of that and a pastry and went back to our table. When my eggs arrived, they were overdone and not what I had ordered. So we started over - and still no chafing dish of scrambled eggs. In addition, other guests were arriving and facing the same frustrations with low to no fresh fruit to select from and empty urns containing coffee - which ran out at least twice while we were there. (We heard from other frustrated guests that they had also been empty before we arrived.) Though we repeatedly asked about fried potatoes and the replenished scrambled eggs, they never did appear. Just as we were getting up from the table, the attendants both came over and told us that there was now a dish of fried potatoes available for us. This was after we had sat there for almost an hour and a half and we were on our way out! Much better management of the breakfast area is desperately needed and the timing and food preparation needs to be dealt with so that food items do not run out at peak times. Numerous guests just gave up and left. This was hardly the "all you can eat breakfast buffet" that was promised when we arrived. There was almost nothing to eat except pastries and yogurt and a small amount of fruit. The hot items were no where to be found (with the exception of a bin of sausages that no one seemed to want). The attendant at the omelet station did not include the correct requested items in my husband's omelet and then overcooked it so badly, he had difficulty getting his fork to cut through it. It was definitely not the meal we had hoped to start our day with and not a great final impression either.
