Perched on a rugged slope overlooking Lake Osoyoos, Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa is an all-suite property set in South Okanagan wine country (known as “Napa of the North”). The hotel is surrounded by arid desert landscape, but it feels far more remote than it actually is -- it’s a 10-minute drive to Osoyoos, and a 15-minute drive south will take you across the border into the U.S.
It’s a great area for outdoor activities -- Osoyoos Lake, Canada’s warmest freshwater lake, according to Rough Guides, is great for swimming and paddle-boarding. Hiking trails are also abundant here. The most popular include the 7.5-mile Irrigation Canal Walkway, near Osoyoos Golf and Country Club, and the Pioneer Walkway, along the sandbar that links the hotel to Osoyoos.
The adjacent 50-acre Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre showcases the Okanagan Indians and their desert habitat, as well as an on-site winery that’s the first to be owned and run by Aboriginals in North America. Pop into the Solterra Desert Spa for a desert stone massage or a lavender wrap after swinging clubs on four nearby golf courses.
The cozy suites have fireplaces for winter nights, sofa beds in the sitting rooms, and fully equipped kitchens with bars. There are several restaurants, including seasonal ones at the winery and one on the beach.
