Overview

"A real little gem", says The AA Hotel Guide, The Lambton Worm is a cosy 4-star inn on the outskirts of Chester-le-Street, County Durham.

Halfway between Durham and Gateshead, Chester-le-Street is a historic market town that dates back to Roman times and is believed to be where the Gospels were first translated into Anglo Saxon English. Its modern-day claim to fame is the Riverside cricket ground, the home of Durham County Cricket Club and a test match venue. Beamish open-air museum is a 10-minute drive away and offers a glimpse into the area's industrial past, with reconstructed villages and coal mine among its attractions. The Angel of the North sculpture is also 10 minutes away.

The inn, owned by the Sonnet 43 microbrewery, holds an AA Dinner award, and is a popular dining venue among locals and guests. The restaurant serves up locally sourced sausages, steaks and sharing platters, and there are suggested ale pairings for each dish. It is open for lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday and tends to book up in advance. There's also classic pub fare, such as pies, burgers and sandwiches on offer in the wood-panelled bar, where you can also sample the brewery's six core ales and a host of guest beers.

There are 14 boutique bedrooms, each named after a different variety of hops in a nod to the owner's brewing heritage. They are exuberantly furnished with Rococo-style furniture and have king-size beds and Bluetooth speaker docks. Family rooms are also equipped with sofa beds for children. On live music nights, some rooms can be noisy but it doesn't last for long -- last-orders is at 11pm.
