No 131 is country-house chic-luxe perfection. An 11-room boutique hotel on the main promenade in Cheltenham, "it's like a flash of New York cool in the Cotswolds," says Condé Nast Traveller, with exposed-brick walls, pendant lighting and David Hockney artwork. The eclectic décor includes a headdress from Papua New Guinea and a 1940s wooden fridge from Brazil, which sit alongside original Georgian features.

Each individually designed bedroom has Apple TV and Sky, a Nespresso machine, an iPod docking station, hand-knotted rugs and antique radiators. Some have Rogeat Lyon baths dating from 1875, which the hotel's owners sourced and refurbished. For views over the Imperial Gardens, choose a room at the front of the hotel; for a quieter room, request one at the back. Bathrooms have double showers and muted green and mustard Moroccan tiles.

Dine in Crazy Eights, the hotel’s restaurant with a focus on local produce, heritage breeds and artisan producers. Standout dishes include 54-hour beef with parsnip purée, spinach and gremolata; venison haunch with roasted artichokes and morel sauce, and Welsh wagyu steak chargrilled on the charcoal wood-fired oven. There’s also an open raw counter that serves fresh seafood.

No 131's number of other options for food include an outdoor courtyard with a retractable roof, four private dining rooms (one in a hidden library) and a pantry with a selection of Neal’s Yard cheeses. The long zinc bar offers cocktails and drinks you can take along to the games room or the conservatory.
