Why We Love It

  • This 4-star hotel in North Yorkshire is less than 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Wetherby
  • Part of the hotel's main building is a former coaching inn dating from the 17th century
  • Spa facilities include an outside hot tub, a Nordic sauna, an ice fountain and a eucalyptus steam room (spa access must be pre-booked; additional fees apply)
  • Harrogate, Leeds and York are all around 30 minutes' drive away

The Bridge Hotel & Spa is in the hamlet of Walshford in North Yorkshire. The hotel is said to stand exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh, so it's not surprising that there is a 17th-century coaching inn at the core of the hotel building. Today, the property is five minutes' drive from the A1(M) and is "well-connected" (The AA) for day trips.

The hotel is less than 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Wetherby, home to Wetherby Racecourse, which hosts racedays from October to July. Bramham Park -- a sprawling wooded estate with an 18th-century manor -- is a 15-minute drive away.

You can also drive 15 minutes to Knaresborough and see Mother Shipton's Cave or the ruined 14th-century castle, or venture 30 minutes by car to spend the day at Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey or Lightwater Valley theme park. The nightlife of Leeds, the spa town of Harrogate and historic York -- "the North's most compelling city", according to Rough Guides -- are also around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. The North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks are 40 minutes' drive away.

The hotel boasts a spa with an outdoor hot tub, two saunas, an ice fountain and a steam room (spa access is £15 per person for three hours and must be pre-booked). The cosy bar is adorned with oak panelling dating back 250 years, and the restaurant serves classic British dishes. Wi-Fi is free.

Bedrooms freshly decorated and nicely furnished. Bed comfy and lashings of hot water for baths.

The breakfast was good. The staff were friendly and courteous.
Other Comments
Noisy room over the bar - loud voices, banging doors. Access to the room difficult. Toilet - no brush, no roll holder. Toilet became blocked. Poor service in the bar. Poor service in the restaurant. Carvery food barely warm.

The spa was very good
Other Comments
The food was virtually inedible. No a la carte choice just a carvery every night which as the food was left standing under heat, soon dried up and was therefore overcooked and hard

The Location just off the A1 was good and the room was excellent. The small decanter of port and the chocolates was a very nice touch.
Other Comments
The hotel room was excellent and the staff are attentive but unfortunately the carvery lets it down, We dined fairly early and yet the food was baked hard.

The food especially the breakfasts.

Like quite a few hotels now the (upgraded) room we had seemed tired, but clean with usual facilities.. However putting a kettle with a fixed base in a cupboard under the TV seems a very odd and dangerous practise. I did bring it to their attention at the time. The Travelzoo deal was a really good one.

I booked this Sunday to Monday break thinking that we would avoid Weddings and attendant celebrations. Not so. Although the wedding celebration was in a separate area of the hotel wedding guests were carousing late into the night as they made their way back to their rooms. I will ring the hotel in future prior to booking to hopefully avoid a repeat performance

The travel zoo deal of an evening meal and a cream tea included in our stay was exceptional value for money. The hotel was well positioned to explore Harrogate, Knaresborough and York.

I was surprised the room didn't have a safe. Thought the dining room could've been cleaner.
