Overview

The Academy is a 4-star boutique townhouse complex in London's bustling West End. The 18th-century hotel is made up of five Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury and "offers a sense of sanctuary just yards from the bustle of Bloomsbury and Oxford Street", says Frommer's.

The hotel is in a great location -- the British Museum, dedicated to human history, art and culture, is less than 10 minutes' walk away. Covent Garden is a 15-minute walk away, the shops on Oxford Street are around 15 minutes' walk away and Bond Street is a 25 minutes' walk away.

Through twisting corridors and staircases you'll find 49 rooms and suites restored to accentuate their Regency character, some with views over the property's private courtyard gardens. Some of the Junior Suites include marble fireplaces, and all have Nespresso machines. Homely features include a well-stocked library, antique furniture and floral fabrics. The hotel also offers a 24-hour porter service.

Guests can dine in the Alchemy Bar, which serves classic British dishes such as beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas, as well as international cuisine. You can take afternoon tea in the library or the conservatory.

Note: The hotel will be undergoing refurbishment, public areas, bedrooms and bathrooms will be renovated one townhouse at a time, with minimal disturbance to guests.

The restaurant and kitchen are undergoing renovation until 23 February. During this time the hotel is unable to offer any restaurant services. Breakfast will be served at a local café,a minutes walk from the hotel and cream teas will be served in your room.

From the press:

  • "The Academy goes for the country intellectual look, in keeping with Bloomsbury's studious yet decadent history" -- Time Out

  • "A private courtyard garden adds allure to this cosy boutique hotel set in a series of renovated Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury" -- Zagat

The hotel is undergoing some renovations but it's only to parts of the hotel that don't seem to be inhabited at the moment. The one impact is that breakfast is served at the cafe on the corner rather than in house but really was all fine.

The garden area, public areas in the hotel were perfect, so relaxing. The quality of the mattress was very confortable , the room furnishings were very nice. Cleanliness 5*

Unfortunately our air conditioning unit was non functional as it was leaking water profusely. The staff tried to resolve this during our stay but couldn't . We were in room 48 , under the roof therefore it was very hot.

Outdoor garden and communal spaces decorated very nicely. Room small but very nicely appointed and comfortable

Would have been nice to know that the restaurant was being refurbished so no breakfast available! Instead, the hotel reimbursed us for breakfast at a nearby cafe which was fine but obviously not as convenient

The staff are particularly friendly and helpful.
Other Comments
The cream tea consisted of only 2 scones. Not a true meaning of a cream tea. Room small, bathroom particularly so. Assume upgrade not available, reception didn't even refer to if possible or not.

The staff were smart, professional and were generally helpful. The extras provided were very welcome, fresh fruit and water. The bed was comfortable. Wi-fi was offered to us without having to ask.
Other Comments
A concrete plinth covered the lower part of the window reducing light and views despite being on the top floor. The room was too hot, the windows could not be opened and when turning the air conditioning on it made strange gurgling sounds. In the morning when using the shower the air conditioning unit began a serious leak, similar to a tap being left running. We tried to order room service but they did not have one of the two dishes available, an alternative option, fish and chips, was a cooked frozen product, we declined and chose to eat out instead. There is no where to mingle with other guests, it seemed more like a block of bedsits rather than quality hotel.
