Overview
Accessible only by a 30-minute flight or 45-minute ferry from Maui, the island of Lanai is a secluded retreat with eye-popping scenery. The red lava cliffs, white sand beaches and highland forests remain nearly unspoiled in their beauty, and if it sounds like a tropical nirvana, that’s the point.
Visitors come to the Four Seasons Resort Lanai to experience a piece of paradise. From its cliffside perch, the property overlooks the pristine white sands of Hulopoe Beach. This area borders a marine preserve, and during the winter months it's not uncommon to see playful whales who’ve migrated to the warm currents and brightly colored fish darting around the clear blue waters.
Fresh off a multimillion-dollar renovation, the AAA 4-Diamond hotel reopened in late February of 2016 and is filled with the sort of luxe details that a billionaire like Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison would be used to. Ellison is a co-owner of the hotel and owns 98% of the island, which might explain why the hotel brought in an outpost of the famed Nobu sushi restaurant (an Ellison favorite) along with three other upscale dining options.
Rooms and suites are filled with teak wood furnishings, soft beige accents and lavish artifacts like handmade Nepalese wallpaper framed with wood. Beds and pillows can be adjusted to the desired degree of firmness, and most rooms have private lanais for enjoying cool ocean breezes. All come with iPad Airs for in-room use. Even the bathrooms are extravagant with slate floors, oversized rainforest showers and in-mirror TVs.
If you can tear yourself away from the rooms and get in the great outdoors, there's a Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole golf course with a putting green and pro shop, a top-notch fitness center and an outdoor pool with an expansive lounge deck
Don't forget to try the luxe full-service spa, where guests can use the cedar sauna or the eucalyptus steam room after their treatments. Add in wallet-busting boutiques from the likes of Missoni and Jimmy Choo, and it’s quite likely you’ll "accidentally" lose your return ticket home to try to prolong your stay.
