Overview

The 4-star Rubens at the Palace boasts a unique location -- one of its nearest neighbors is Buckingham Palace -- and offers views over the Royal Mews.

Built in the 1800s to accommodate debutantes attending royal parties, the property is walking distance to the Royal Parks, Victoria Station and Westminster -- and has garnered quite the reputation for its delightful staff and living wall, home to 10,000 plants.

Commonly for a historical property, some of the rooms are on the smaller side, but all are quiet and charming. The décor is traditional -- cozy beds, elegant drapes, antiques and original art (including portraits of Henry VIII).

Families are well cared for, with interconnecting rooms, pull-out sofa beds in the more spacious Executive King Rooms, treats at turndown and even a 'Director of Fun'. Pets are also welcome (charges apply).

The Library Restaurant has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for its modern British fare, notably its Inverawe Scottish and Burren Irish Smoked Salmon (carved at the table), Gressingham duck breast with tarragon-stuffed mushrooms and the lauded honeycomb ice cream.

After dinner, retire to the Cavalry Bar for a cocktail. The addition of the hotel’s 69-foot-high Living Wall in 2013 has inspired a range of garden-themed drinks, featuring Bloom gin, elderflower and edible flowers.

There is no on-site gym, but free passes to the nearby LA Fitness are available, and Rubens also has a sports buddies program, where staff team up with guests to enjoy any number of sports.

Welcome cocktail most embarrassing. When we asked it became a public debate between 3 staff including Bar Manager. We became centre of attention and considered walking out.

The staff wasn’t very friendly. The rooms were so small. No upgrade in room availability but I heard someone else get offered one.

Staff was polite.

Initial room given to us was very different from the advertised pictures and was highly disappointing. There was only one small window with camouflage net to cover the huge HVAC vent just outside. Interior was all red and tacky (like a themed motel). We had to ask for a different room which was better but certainly not an "upgrade".

Room slightly dated and could do with little upgrade

Great location and breakfast
Other Comments
There was an issue with the payment. The booking said "full prepayment" and we arrived thinking everything was already charged. Because of the payment not being taken at time of booking and the change in conversion rate we ended up paying more. There is also construction in the area so you are awaken to the sounds of jackhammers and other construction equipment.

Loved the breakfast, beautiful room and as my friend is Vegan she was very well catered for at the hotel - the staff in the restaurant were also very good and the food was of a very high quality

With regard to the welcome cocktail, we were not issued with any vouchers on check in, so I did go back to reception to ask about them and they issued us with vouchers, although when we used them in the bar, the vouchers we received were not for cocktails and we could only have spirits or wine. We had a gin and tonic and a prosecco and then paid for cocktails. The bar and the staff were very nice, but it was a shame we did not receive the cocktails as advertised.
