Why We Love It

  • The hotel is in a wooded valley in an area that has red deer, wild ponies and even an extinct volcano
  • William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge both lived nearby and were inspired by the landscape surrounding the hotel
  • Dunster Castle and Exmoor National Park are both less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The Grade I-listed ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, and Tiverton Castle, a 17th-century country house, are less than an hour away by car

Overview

Combe House Hotel is a privately owned country house hotel in Somerset's Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hidden away in a wooded valley, this boutique property has 17 individually styled bedrooms and a cosy cottage feel.

Located in the village of Holford, the hotel is around 30 minutes' drive from Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead. Dunster Castle, a former motte and bailey castle that's now a grand country house, and Exmoor National Park are also half an hour's drive away, while Tiverton Castle, Glastonbury Abbey and the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare are within an hour's drive.

Wookey Hole Caves -- an extensive network of limestone caves that is noted for the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole -- is just over an hour's drive away.

The Woodland Hill circular walk passes right by the hotel. It will take you through open heathland and offers impressive views of the Somerset Levels, the Mendip Hills, the Bristol Channel and the Brecon Beacons.

The on-site restaurant and bar use produce from local suppliers, from Somerset cider to artisan cheese.

Superior Rooms are more spacious than Classic Rooms and have garden views. Wi-Fi is free in public areas or you can pay £2.50 per day for in-room access.

We enjoyed the beautiful setting and very pretty grounds. The staff were very friendly and advised on a local walking route from the hotel through the woods and up to the top of the valley where there were spectacular views over the sea to Wales. There was a good selection of dishes for dinner, well cooked and nice selection for buffet breakfast. We had a wonderful couple of days and would go back in a flash.

Helpful, friendly mainly Polish staff, professional and caring at all times. Superior twin room, no.11, not very spacious, shower door hanging loose, water pressure v.low. Food not as expected, with breakfast buffet farcical as you will find out. Dinner not great.

Great location for walks long or short. Very peaceful. our Superior double had a pleasant outlook.
Other Comments
The breakfast buffet (no cooked items) was good but our evening meal in the restaurant was disappointing - portions were small, the vegetarian risotto was second rate and the pudding was overcooked and hard (microwaved too long). We did not feel it was worth risking a meal there on our second night. Also their selection of white wines could have been a little more varied.

My room faced onto the back with oil tanks and extraction unit below window , so noise from that. Plus staff chatting on mobiles and a back light left on all night shinning into the room...other than that it was a really nice place to stay!

This is the only experience I have had of having to pay for a cooked breakfast, I thought this was rather odd. We were not offered the prosecco that was part of the offer. I would have checked my booking but I had handed in my Travelzoo print out and the wifi was not good enough to check the booking even if I had wanted to. Apart from these comments the location was superb and we enjoyed our stay.
