Overview

Set in 35 acres of pretty gardens overlooking Lake Massawippi, the AAA 4-Diamond Manoir Hovey is a quiet retreat made for romantic getaways. The property began life in the 19th century, modeled after President Washington’s summer mansion, Mount Vernon, and is now an intimate Relais & Chateaux resort with only 37 rooms, a first-rate restaurant and the atmosphere of a private estate. Staff are welcoming and friendly and are known for remembering guests’ names.

Populated by British loyalists at the end of the 1700s, the Eastern Townships still feel "more English than England," notes the Guardian, despite being only a 90-minute drive from bustling Montreal. This is rolling farm country, complete with clapboard churches and wooded slopes, and the pretty little town of North Hatley fits right in, complete with its bakery, antique shops and century-old architecture.

Beyond romantics, epicures come from across the country to try the restaurant's award-winning Quebecois cuisine. (Lonely Planet raves that it’s one of the best in the area.) Don’t miss the heaving cheese cart, overflowing with local raw-milk and artisan cheeses. The more relaxed option is a cozy pub, complete with lakeside terrace. There’s an on-site gym, and a range of activities to try, from cycling, kayaking, tennis and swimming in the summer to snowshoeing and skating in the winter.

Rooms are all unique -- the country-style rooms are prettily furnished with antique beds, floral prints and checked fabrics, while more modern rooms have sharp furniture and glass-topped tables. Many come with whirlpool baths and some have fireplaces. Opt for a room facing the lake for picturesque vistas -- the best have terraces with front-row views of the sunset.

From the press:
  • "This lovely resort offers handsomely set rooms in a picturesque lakeside setting … the award-wining restaurant is among the best in the Eastern Townships" -- Lonely Planet
  • "The staff is obliging and diligent and the meals excellent" -- The New York Times
  • "This retreat feels like a private estate" -- Fodor's

Outstanding in every way. Very attentive and personalized service, all over the property. The food in the Hatley Restaurant was fabulous, fresh, locally sourced. Many thanks to the restaurant Director, Mr. L'Abbé and his staff for their special attentions. Our suite was exquisite and the housekeeping does an amazing job at keeping the room spotless! We have traveled all over the world and this hotel is at the top of our favorites list. What distinguishes a 5 star hotel from others is the level of details in the service, and this hotel delivers! We cannot wait to go back!

I was there a little out of season and the weather was not great but I didi enjoy the solitude and beauty of the setting

dinner and the service were excellent however I found the service too be a little too fawning. eg I would prefer my bottle of wine to be closer in order that I may pour it as I please. It seems senseless for a waiter to pour a dribble simply for the sake of doing so. Also too much hovering around spoils the moment. I'm not trying to make a big deal of this, it is simply an observation and I realize that it may be a quirk of mine. I very much enjoyed both the food and service overall.
