Set in 20 acres of grounds and woodland, the impressive Penmaenuchaf Hall is situated at the end of a long winding drive. The Greystone building was built in 1860 and is in a beautiful spot overlooking the River Mawddach, in the heart of Snowdonia National Park.

Coed y Brenin Forest Park is only a 10-minute drive and is home to a number of mountain bike and hiking trails. Anglers can fish for sea trout in 13 miles of the River Mawddach and the market town of Dolgellau is nearby.

The AA Hotel Guide describes the hotel as a "handsome Victorian pile" with "magnificient views" and it has been given a VisitWales Gold Award. The restaurant has an AA Rosette and is listed in The Michelin Guide. There is a set and à la carte menus available, featuring dishes such as foie gras crème brulée with madeira jelly, roasted fillet of organic pork with black pudding and roasted apple, seared monkfish with roasted chicory and confit peppers. Many of the herbs and vegetables are grown on site and the wine list is excellent.

The hotel is full of little period details -- expect a smattering of antiques, log fires, comfy sofas – and the bedrooms are traditional in décor. Wi-Fi is free throughout and there are bathrobes and tea- and coffee-making facilities provided. Some have small balconies and views over the idyllic grounds, and some are dog friendly (although dogs are not permitted in the rest of the hotel). There are no lifts so ask for a room on the ground floor if you have any mobility requirements.

We had a lovely time at the hotel, it was very homely with log fires burning on what was a sunny and very frosty weekend making it all the more welcoming and the location was perfect.

The building looks immaculate from the outside and the location is great. Diane, who also worked at Pen Hall, tried to rectify the situation after Mark had offended us on a few occasions. It was beyond repair, but I appreciate how hard she tried. It mustn't be easy working with that man every day.

Mark, who works at Pen Hall (I think he's an owner), was rude, socially awkward and made us feel unwelcome from the moment we entered the building. We picked Pen Hall because it was apparently dog friendly, according to the Travelzoo website. Instead of saying "Welcome to Pen Hall", Mark said "I hope you've brought a cage for your dog because you can't leave it alone in the room". We were then shepherded in the back entrance of the hotel, where the bins, service door and kitchen ventilation are, and told the dog isn't allowed anywhere but a small room near the main entrance. "Dog freindly" eh. We didn't receive any correspondence saying that our dog must be caged or "left in the car", as Mark suggested. If we did have this information, we wouldn't have booked the deal. Plain and simple. We also booked this deal for the three-course meal, which we couldn't have because we couldn't leave our dog on her own. We couldn't have breakfast either, as Mark's suggestion was to "come down one at a time and eat something quickly." Our deal cost us £290 in total. £200 for the initial deal, £50 for weekend supplements and £40 for our dog (£20 per night). Instead of this being a lovely experience, it turned into a place to lay our heads. I definitely won't ever book a "dog friendly" deal with Travelzoo again based on this. What a waste of time... I should've just got an AirBnB.
