"One of the loveliest bays in Britain" -- Time Out

Why We Love It

  • The hotel is set in 72 acres of "beautiful landscaped sub-tropical gardens", says The AA Hotel Guide 2017
  • It overlooks St Ives beach, which Time Out rates as one of Britain's 10 best beaches
  • There is an 18-hole golf course, racquet sports facilities, indoor and outdoor heated pools and a fitness suite

Tregenna Castle Hotel was built in 1774, and is set in over 70 acres of gardens that overlook St Ives and the Atlantic. It's a destination in its own right, with an 18-hole par-3 golf course; tennis, squash and badminton courts; beauty treatment rooms; swimming pools; a brasserie restaurant and more.

The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the white-sand Porthminster Beach, as well as the seaside town of St Ives, which Lonely Planet describes as a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays". In the 1920s, St Ives was the epicentre of Cornwall's art scene, and today it is home to Tate St Ives -- number 36 on our list of 101 Things to do in Cornwall -- the Leach Pottery, and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.

The South West Coast Path -- which leads to the Hayle Estuary or the picturesque Zennor village -- can be joined within 15 minutes' walk of the hotel. St Michael's Mount is a 20-minute drive away, and Land's End is 40 minutes away by car.

Castle Double Rooms at Tregenna Castle Hotel don't face the sea. Castle Sea View Double Rooms have views across the bay, and some have a sofa bed. You can also enjoy sea views from the Brasserie restaurant, which serves locally sourced seafood, as well as stone-baked pizzas and juicy British steaks.

On our visit 9th -11th Nov 2017, check in was very good, with a friendly welcome from the duty receptionist. The allocated room was very good at the front of the hotel immediately above the entrance with super views. We decided to eat in the Brasserie that evening, only to find that the service was confused, the food was mediocre, and not good value for money.Unlike our previous experiences at this venue. a peaceful night followed, with the thought of the celebrated 'Cornish breakfast' awaiting us in the morning! Alas this was not to be,we arrived down for breakfast to be asked to sit down and wait ,along with many others whilst tables became available,as service was in the smaller of the two dining rooms, eventually we got seated only to join other guests waiting for food/beverages to be replenished. Second night,we ate out in St Ives and returned to the hotel to find a Golf Club function was taking place, something we had been forewarned about, but assured that it should be a quiet occaision and would normally finish around midnight. And so to bed, sometime before midnight a loud fracas broke out, with screaming ,shouting and aggressive behaviour going on,closely followed by the arrival of numerous Police vehicles, blue lights flashing, farewell peaceful night! The next morning ,breakfast was even worse with guests in the queue again, but then being asked to get their breakfast on a tray a proceed to the brasserie to eat it! which did nothing to enhance the already well cooled food! fortunately the duty Manageress made the effort to provide fresh /hot beverages to those of us seated in the Brasserie, from the machine behind the bar. On checking out ,the lady behind the desk offered us a brief apology for any inconvenience caused, and explained that the fracas was unexpected (I should hope not!!) and the breakfast scenario was due to the amount of guests attendant in the hotel! If the Hotel was nearly full why then were they not using the larger dining area? This is the only time, during our numerous stays at Tregenna, that we have been disappointed to say the least, and we believe that much of the hassle could have been avoided with better, prior planning.

Congratulations on all the TLC you have recently put into The Hotel and Grounds. It is regaining its former glory. Suggest you improve the Bar as it is rather stark and thus unwelcoming - maybe more snuggy !
