New Place, Southampton is a grand, Jacobean-style manor house designed by Edwin Lutyens (who designed the Cenotaph in London, and planned and built much of New Delhi). Grade I-listed, the property is two miles outside the South Downs National Park.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays retail centre are around 20 minutes' drive away, and it takes 30 minutes to drive to Southampton. The historic cathedral cities of Winchester and Chichester are within half an hour's drive, and the pretty New Forest villages of Beaulieu and Brockenhurst take 45 minutes. Arundel Castle, a restored castle and stately home, is 50 minutes' drive away.

Bedrooms have contemporary décor and free Wi-Fi, and are located in the annex, a short stroll from the main house.

The restaurant serves a mix of modern international dishes, or you can choose deli sandwiches, gourmet burgers and stone-baked pizzas in the wood-panelled lounge bar.

Leisure facilities at the hotel include a gym, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a Jacuzzi. There are also tennis courts.

The interiors of the dining rooms are beautiful and the tables are nicely laid out too with tablecloths and flowers - a joy to enter - and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately the food didn't match the expectation.

1. Nowhere does the advertised and given information tell you that the bedrooms are not in the main buildings. All the photos are of the main building. Nothing about bedrooms being some distance away and that you have to walk out in the open air to get from them to the main building - not even a covered way to protect from the rain. Also the path is not paved all the way. 2. There were no instructions in the room about the heating. Eventually we found the thermostat on the radiator but it was very difficult to see and get at. I used the torch on my iPhone to peer at the dial. 3. The coffee at breakfast was always stewed and nearly cold. I asked for hot coffee one morning but it didn't make any difference. 4. We were surprised that it was the same menu each night. Just the Chef's Specials were changed. 5. The food quality was very variable.

The only slight negative is that the central heating system was very noisy and woke us up when it came on in the morning

We were in an accessible room with very good bathroom facilities and car parking right outside the door. The downside was the long walk to the restaurant and the bar. On returning to our room after a lovely dinner it was raining quite hard, there are no covered ways and the route we had been advised to take involved some steps, difficult for my wife and which by now were vey wet and slippery. I took this up with reception and asked if there was a disabled entrance to the main building (Bar and Restaurant), I was informed that there was but staff assistance was required. There is not a single sign or indication about this route anywhere. This really is totally unnaceptable and I feel that the hotel should act on this matter on an urgent basis.

we had room 4 which was a de-luxe room newly renovated - but the external entrance door needs adequate draught exclusion!

It was such a relaxing place to be. We didn’t have any complaints at all quite the opposite everything about the place is wonderful. All the food, very lovely staff from reception, dining room, pool staff etc everyone was so helpful and pleasant. The room was a very restful place to be in. We didn’t play tennis as the courts weren’t ready to play on we were too early. No complaints whatsoever I cannot praise the New Place enough. Would definitely go back and recommend anybody else to go.
