Dartington Hall is a 14th-century manor set in 800 acres of Grade II-listed gardens on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. The estate is a destination in its own right, with an on-site cinema, a restaurant, a visitor centre and a selection of shops. The hotel hosts events such as the annual Ways with Words Festival, where readers can meet authors and hear guest speakers.

The Grade I-listed property is a 10-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park -- a place of "honey-tinged moors" and "moss-smothered boulders in woods of twisted trees", says Lonely Planet. Dartmoor was one of the filming locations for Steven Spielberg's "War Horse". Other nearby places to visit include Exeter and Plymouth, and the towns on the English Riviera: Brixham, Torquay and Paignton. All are less than 35 minutes' drive away.

The estate dates from 1388 and was once home to two of Henry VIII's wives, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr. At its heart is a courtyard containing the restored 14th-century Great Hall. The Guardian describes it as "an enchanting scene". The White Hart overlooks the property's gardens and features fare from local producers.

Ensuite bedrooms are positioned around the medieval courtyard and overlook the grounds. Wi-Fi is free.

Beautiful calm place with lots of lovely walks

The rooms were very hot, no choice but to have the window open. Breakfast service was chaotic and needs to be reorganised although the food was good.

Asked for an update, told would be £30. Asked for cheese after dinner-none available. Noisy all night (?water filling a bath all day/night). Although mentioned a birthday celebration on booking, we were allocated a table with no flowers or music in a room adjacent to the restaurant but not in the main restaurant for dinner where we ended up eventually and told there was no cheese in an award winning restaurant! One member of the staff was very helpful on the Thursday at lunch time.

Walking around the beautiful gardens & food in the White Hart.
Other Comments
Standard rooms are a little snug & the shower plughole had some build up of hair which meant it was easily blocked. I would expect this to be checked daily given the price of rooms & hotel standard being aspired to.

The location is excellent for touring South Hams and Parts of Dartmoor. The buildings around the courtyard are beautiful, especially in the spring with the trees in blossom. Great to be able to go for walks directly from the hotel.
Other Comments
We thought the evening meals in the White Hart were expensive, compared to similar meals elsewhere. The breakfasts, however, were good.
