Overview
Fresh off a major renovation that refreshed the public spaces and updated every guest room (including new bathrooms for many), a revamped and renewed Hotel Palomar emerged in March 2016. Located in the trendy Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., the Palomar is surrounded by a bevy of restaurants, shops and ritzy estates.
Palomar guests will find the rooms surprisingly spacious -- Fodor's calls them some of the largest in town (and ask for a corner room for even more space). The sleek and artsy interiors include new Georgetown-grey platform beds with 300-thread-count linens, large flat-screen TVs and comfy lounge chairs. As part of the Kimpton family, guests enjoy complimentary coffee each morning and a nightly hosted evening wine hour. The spacious rooms even include yoga mats for an early morning stretch, and the hotel rents out bikes for free so guests can explore the area.
Since it's located on the second floor, many don't know that the Palomar has a large outdoor pool flanked by private cabanas and a sundeck with plenty of room to sunbathe. The pool (which is only open seasonally) also has food and beverage service available for drinks and snacks. There's a fitness center right next door (with good pool views) and while there's no full spa, guests can arrange for in-room massages, body scrubs, facials and mani-pedis.
The on-site restaurant, Urbana, earns high marks from Zagat for its "delicious menu" including vegetables from the hotel's rooftop garden as well as its "sexy-cool bar scene", while the Washington Post says the "Mediterranean menu sparkles in an intimate setting." The menu includes pastas made in-house like lobster ravioli and bucatini with littleneck clams, while the bar pours craft cocktails (along with zero-ABV "mocktails").
The Palomar is just a 5-minute walk from the Dupont Circle Metro station, which can whisk you to the White House and the National Mall in just 10 minutes, Capitol Hill in 20 and Reagan National Airport in a half hour.
- "Aside from the hard-to-beat location, [the] rooms are some of the largest in town" -- Fodor's
- A "stylish, modern boutique" with "elegant details" -- Gayot
