In East Iceland, eight hours’ drive from Reykjavik, lies the town of Egilsstadir and the Icelandair Hotel Herad. The property overlooks the Lagarfljot river and is within easy driving distance of Hallormsstadur, Iceland’s biggest forest, the port of Seydisfjordur, and the ski slopes of Stafdalur and Oddskard.
Egilsstadir itself is a quiet town but there is a supermarket, off licence, café, hairdressers and petrol station a short stroll from the hotel. Further afield, Bjolfur mountain is a favourite with local hikers, with amazing views from the top, and there’s a natural hot springs pool in Laugarfell, which is 40°C all year round and is 1-hour away by car. Egilsstadir is a good stopover point on the way to Akureyri in the north (just over three hours’ by car), and is a 1-hour flight from Reykjavik.
Back at the hotel, there’s a daily happy hour in the restaurant and bar from 5-7pm, and it’s a good place to watch the sun set over the river, or enjoy an Icelandic beer on the balcony under the midnight sun in summer. In the morning, a buffet breakfast is served with porridge, granola, yoghurt, waffles, fruit, cheese, ham, bread and jam. There’s an impressive Sunday brunch on offer, and the evening menu revolves around local fare. Try the reindeer steak or Icelandic lamb.
There are 60 bedrooms, after the hotel finished renovations in 2013. All have wooden flooring, are a good size and functional. Wi-Fi is available (fees apply), and the best overlook the river at the back of the property.
