This 4-star country-house hotel is located on the site of an 11th-century church, 15 minutes' drive from Stratford-upon-Avon and around 20 minutes' drive from Warwick.

Steeped in history, the Elizabethan manor boasts 11 acres of grounds incorporating a 100-year-old topiary garden, a fountain and the church where William Shakespeare reportedly married Anne Hathaway.

Warwick Castle, Charlecote Park, Tudor World and Ragley Hall, considered one of England's finest Palladian mansions, are all less than a 20-minute drive away. The pretty town of Stratford-upon-Avon, where you'll find Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Mary Arden's Farm, is less than 10 minutes away by car.

Facilities at the hotel include a health club with a fully equipped gym, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a steam room, plus tennis courts, a yoga hut and beauty rooms. Alternatively, guests can relax in the library, reputedly visited by Shakespeare himself.

The hotel offers the AA-Rosette Stuart Restaurant, with oak panelling and a fireplace, and The Great Hall with its minstrels' gallery, both situated in the old manor house. The AA praises the Stuart Restaurant for cooking that is "impressive" and "accomplished".

Rooms are split between the Manor House and the Cedar Barns, all with traditional décor and views of the hotel grounds. The AA says the "spacious bedrooms and suites" in a "country-house style" are "thoughtfully designed and well equipped". Dog-friendly rooms are available on request. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

The service that the waiting staff provided was poor. During the evening meal the wait between each course was over half an hour. In the morning we were told that tea and coffee would be served with breakfast, we waited and waited it never arrived, so we decided to start eating and we asked the staff on a further two occasions for coffee and still no coffee arrived. We were asked what time we would like are evening meal, we gave a time only to be told that we couldn't have it and that the only time they had available was 21:00. They had a bar area but refused to serve the meal in there stating that a different menu was served in the bar area. The general attitude of the staff was that everything was too much trouble and if you asked them for anything it was a major inconvenience and you were made to feel that you were interrupting their day. The gym was tiny, if you had four people in there it felt crowded.

We were so happy with this deal, great value for money and everything at the hotel was fantastic. The hotel is only a 10 min drive from Stratford upon Avon so in a great location. Could not recommend this enough we'll definitely be back!

Lovely, well maintained gardens
Other Comments
Lovely hotel, but room was very far from reception, up two flights of stairs and we had to ask for assistance with baggage, as none was offered. Dinner was average, but I was not told that the cheese course merited an eight pound supplement although it was in small print on the menu I discovered later.
