Overview

Although San Antonio might be famed for its rough-and-tumble past, the Westin Riverwalk is anything but: Stepping into the lobby, guests are greeted by ornate Spanish-influenced architecture, vaulted ceilings and plush gold-and-blue furnishings. There are also distinctly Texan accents like wrought-iron coffee tables and candle holders — not to mention sweeping views of the San Antonio River.

The Texas-chic vibe extends to the guest-rooms, too, thanks to carved wooden dressers and end tables, leather foot-stools and custom iron bedframes. They also come with private balconies overlooking the river and marble bathrooms, as well as modern necessities like coffee makers with complimentary Starbucks products.

The chairs in the balcony were comfortable. Employees in room service, the business shop, and ONE of the front desk staff were very kind and helpful.

Never again! That is my opinion on whether or not to return to the Westin Riverside. It was a nightmare from attempted check-in to check-out. I’m a cancer patient with a compromised immune system. However, we had never been to the San Antonio Christmas River Parade. As a result, we decided to rent a room with a balcony so that we could enjoy the parade from the privacy of our room while having everything conveniently nearby such as bathroom, snacks, drinks, etc. Our package included internet and free breakfast. We attempted to check-in at 2 P.M. and were informed that our rooms were not ready; since we knew regular check-in was 3 PM, it was no big deal. The front desk asked for my cell number and told me I would receive a text when the room was ready. During a conversation with another guest in the waiting area, she told us that she was told her room would not be ready until 4 P.M. I became concerned and went back to the front desk and was told the guest in our room was not leaving until 5:30; as a result, by the time it was cleaned and ready for the next guest, it would be 7 PM – the River Parade was scheduled to start at 6! She said we could have another room which was NOT a premium king and a higher floor. I discussed it with my spouse and we both agreed this would defeat the entire purpose of our visit. I was LIVID! I went back to the front desk and talked with another employee who apologized for the inconvenience, gave us some orange wristbands and said we could watch the parade from one of two balconies which had been reserved for guests who could not yet get into their rooms; obviously, this aggravation had been anticipated. We went to one of the balconies to get away from the crowd and any possible person who may be slightly ill and waited. Within 30 minutes, a security guard came into the room and demanded that we leave as the “room was reserved”. I told him that the room was reserved for inconvenienced guests like ourselves. He asked us where we got that information and we told him the front desk. He said he’d be right back but never returned. A half hour later, ANOTHER employee confronted us and warned us that management had informed him to remove us immediately or he would be locking us out, unable to return back into the hotel lobby. By some miracle, I was able to remain civil, although I spoke through clenched teeth, gave him the same information we had been told and demanded to see the manager! The employee left and never returned. The parade came and went and we STILL had not received our “text” to let us know the room was ready; by then, it was nearly 8 PM. We went to the front desk to discover it had been ready for awhile now! When we entered the room, we discovered that the toilet seat was broken and the water would not shut off. We managed to temporarily fix it for our use. We filled out the order slip for our free breakfast for the next morning and place it on the handle with the request it be delivered between 9:15 and 9:30 AM. The next morning, we got the knock at our door at 10. After breakfast, we went to checkout as I could not leave this hotel fast enough – I was thoroughly disgusted with the entire adventure. I verified with the front desk that the internet and breakfast was included and she said it had been noted in the records and removed. I should have known better: in my haste to leave the hotel, I took her word for it only to discover that I had been charged the full amount for my “free breakfast”. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to the Westin Riverwalk and intend to warn others of the type of treatment they can anticipate if they should be so inclined to rent a room from them. To pay nearly $500 to receive shabby treatment and broken toilet seats is not my idea of money well spent.

Everyone was very nice & friendly. Great service at the front desk, restaurant & bar. Check in & out was very easy. Rooms were big & clean. Nice little balcony to sit & enjoy my morning coffee.

The only issue we encountered was that our balcony did not have river views-it looked over the pool. However, they did have a room available for us when we arrived at 12:30 pm.

Room was not a balcony room as you could not sit out there. It was not quite a foot deep to the railing and with the sliding glass door access most adults would not be able to step outside. When we told the front desk they told us that was a balcony room and if we wanted to access the balcony that was called a terrace room. I believe the majority of us think a balcony room is one you can walk outside on and sit down.

Front desk person (Natalia), in the early morning hour (6 am) during checkout), was very cordial and helpful in trying to resolve room rate charge discrepancy. Location was very good for walking around for sightseeing. We did enjoy the riverwalk area of San Antonio despite the overrated hotel stay. If I could do over again, I would have stayed at a better hotel located close to the riverwalk and just drive or walk over to the area to enjoy the views and eateries. It would have been a much better value!

Condition of room was not great. Beds were not comfortable; felt like mattresses were old and worn from use. Room view from balcony of riverwalk area blocked by trees. Room service cleaning not top notch. Buffet breakfast was not good and definitely not up to the standards for a 4 star hotel. Front desk (in evening) not helpful in resolving room rate charge discrepancy between Travelzoo confirmed rate and Westin hotel charged rate. Front desk supervisor (in the evening before checkout) not friendly or helpful. I had to call Travelzoo customer support to help out. Supervisor then only fixed the 2nd day rate but not the 1st day rate which I did not discover until the next morning during checkout.
