Overview

Dating back to 1575, this restored East Sussex coaching inn is now a boutique hotel that blends historic charm with contemporary comforts.

The hotel has 34 individually designed rooms with bespoke furniture, DVD libraries and free Wi-Fi, plus bathrooms featuring marble-top baths, chrome power showers and REN products.

The seasonal menu in the George Grill features locally sourced fare with a wood-charcoal grill at the heart of the kitchen to prepare seafood just caught from Rye Bay, local meats and vegetables.

The hotel is in the centre of Rye, described by Lonely Planet as "one of England's most beautiful medieval villages", known for its art scene, antiques and local seafood. Take a pleasant stroll through the unhurried cobbled streets, admire the historic architecture and browse the many boutique shops. Other nearby attractions include Battle Abbey (built on the site of the Battle of Hastings), Camber Castle, Lamb House where writer Henry James often stayed, and Camber Sands.

Other Comments
The room although nice was not on a par with the photo presented in the advert. A small grip was getting in and out of the shower, the shower screen was fixed in place and the gap to get in and out of the bathtub was tight, and did not leave much room between your body and a very hot towel rail. We are both slim athletic people, I'm not sure how a larger person would cope. One other disappointment for us was the selection of vegetarian food available in the restaurant. The starters were neither original nor appealing (soup or salad) and the two veggie mains contained the same components and actually would have made better starters being a sharing platter and another salad. The puddings however were amazing and makes me think that the standard of non vegetarian food was probably higher. Restaurant service was fairly slow, we waited for half an hour to order and that was once we had managed to get a waiters attention and asked them. A table that arrived after us were seen to promptly whilst we were ignored. The seemed really busy yet many of the tables in the restaurant were unoccupied.
