Why We Love This Hotel

  • 4-star hotel on the Magnificent Mile in the Near North neighborhood
  • Great location for shopping and walking distance from attractions like Water Tower Place and the John Hancock building
  • Stay at the hotel with the famous "Tip-Top-Tap" sign

Towering over the Magnificent Mile with a "stately presence" (Frommers), the Warwick Allerton is a central 4-star option for an urban getaway. Its location on Chicago’s main shopping avenue puts it within a five-minute walk of top attractions like the Museum of Contemporary Art and the John Hancock Observatory.

Chic and contemporary, the Standard rooms come with queen beds, 32-inch flat-panel TVs and marble bathrooms. Upgrade to a king bed or opt for an executive room -- they have separate living areas, and some have views of the Magnificent Mile. The area can occasionally be a bit noisy, so if possible, we'd recommend requesting a higher room to avoid being disturbed by street sounds.

Built in the 1920s as Michigan Avenue's first high-rise building, the 25-story hotel has an art deco feel inside, with an Italian Renaissance exterior facing the street. The M Avenue Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, while the M Avenue Lounge features signature martinis and small bites. Although there’s no pool, the hotel does have a small fitness center.

Our room was clearly the "cheap room." Against all logic, the bed was oriented to the short side of the long and narrow rectangle so you couldn't walk around it to the other side. It also meant that it face the TV, which was far on the other end of the rectangle. But the remote didn't work anyway (which we did tell the staff as we checked out). The woman at the desk did say they'd had complaints about that room and a fix was in the works. Otherwise, a wonderful place and we would come back.

Elevators are small and very slow. The room itself was in very need of freshening up. Peeled wallpaper, filthy windows, chipped edges on furniture, dusty corners in room. On the positive, the one regular bed was very comfortable, towels thick and absorbent, plenty of hot water, amazing house keeping staff.

Requested room with two beds. Called four days prior to confirm, was told a notation was in the file for 2 beds. Went to check in and was told only available is one bed with no room for a rollaway. Was told I had no other option. After 20 minutes of getting nowhere and asking to speak to a manager, a different employee, not the manager, came over and found a room with a bed and fold out sofa. At over $200 a night, not what I paid for but better than nothing. Also, no one informed me at check-in of the ongoing strike going on. At 8:00 am both Sunday and Monday morning EXTREMELY loud picketers with vuvuzelas, horns, drums, megaphones, loud enough to clearly be heard up on the 14th floor, marched in front of the front door all morning. You had to yell over them at the second floor reception area.
