"A historic spot with a Renaissance vibe” -- Asbury Park Press

Why We Love It

  • A historic building with renovated rooms almost right on the beach
  • Asbury Park offers swanky seafood restaurants and fashionable martini bars at the water's edge
  • Check out headliners at The Stone Pony concert venue, where Bruce Springsteen got his start
  • The nearby boardwalk runs along the New Jersey shoreline through historic beachfront buildings

Overview

This 1920s oceanfront hotel recently underwent a renovation that “showcases its Beaux-Arts splendor, while adding contemporary amenities” (Asbury Park Press). Guests can sprawl out at the seasonal outdoor pool with oversized pool deck and private cabanas, as well as enjoy a cocktail at the outdoor tiki bar.

The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel is located in historic Asbury Park, a vibrant seaside destination for the past 100 years. Step outside The Berkeley to the newly restored boardwalk that spans the beach.

Follow the boardwalk south half a block to pass through the Grand Arcade connecting the old convention center and Paramount Theatre, maritime-themed brick halls designed by the same architects who drafted Grand Central Terminal. There's also a pinball museum, antique shops, a retro '60s bowling alley and The Stone Pony concert venue, where Bruce Springsteen got his start and many other headliners make stops through summer.

From the press:
  • “Steps away from the Asbury Park boardwalk, Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel is a historic spot with a Renaissance vibe” -- Asbury Park Press
  • “Asbury Park mixes the draw of the beach and a grand history and adds innovative dining and music spots” -- The New York Times

"It's storied history. My family stated here in the 60s-70s when it was the Berkeley-Carteret. It has undergone many changes and many hard times but it had a bright and robust future now as a reinvented boutique hotel. The staff was friendly. My wife and I spoke to a lady manager although I forgot her name at the poolside early on Tuesday, June 13th. We will go back again!!!"

I really enjoyed the pool, especially the cabanas and the availability of food/drink at the pool. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, though we did get differing information from different staff members.

The hotel room could have been cleaner. There was no information available in the room about hotel amenities or area attractions, etc. There is a $35 parking fee and a charge for wi-fi. An in-room refrigerator would have been appreciated. The Asbury Park parking situation is bizarre.

In time this hotel will blossom and truly be the gem of the city by the sea. Hopefully the ugly pavilion on the boardwalk will be reinvented to complement the Berkeley!

Please note that parking is an issue there... when I checked in, I asked about parking but was told that the lot was "full" but I could check back in the "morning"... I was leaving in the "morning"... we drove back to the lot and were told by the attendant that there were plenty of spots!
