Located at the foot of the Great Gable and Scafell Massif mountains in the Borrowdale Valley, the AA-rated 3-star Scafell Hotel has excellent hiking and walking trails nearby. Derwentwater, a lake with four National Trust-owned islands, is a 5-minute drive away and offers more leisurely strolls around its shores or cruises from one of the seven lakeshore jetties.
All rooms at the hotel were refurbished in 2009 and come with views of the surrounding countryside. Some also have restored antique furniture. The restaurant serves Cumbrian and locally sourced produce and guests can choose from dishes such as chicken, pork and bacon terrine with a pistachio and apricot sauce, basil-and-parmesan-crusted rack of lamb, aubergine parmigiano and sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce. The hotel has a Visit Britain Gold Award, which is given to properties that outperform their star rating.
Upgrade to the new Barnes Wallis Suite for an extra £40 per night.
Book by 28 December.
