Embark on what Rough Guides calls a ''romantic'' and ''leisurely alternative'' to flying with this offer from FirstGroup. Tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper -- an overnight rail service operating between London Euston and destinations in the Northwest and Scotland -- are now £39 per person, one way.

This offer, which includes travel and accommodation in a twin-berth standard cabin, saves up to 48% on prices we found elsewhere. Destinations include Carlisle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness.

This price is available until 26 March, but you must book by 14 February.

Those travelling alone may have to share with someone of the same sex.

The service does not operate on Saturdays.

Travelzoo tip: Don't use the Caledonian Sleeper as just a means of getting from A to B. Instead, travel overnight to Fort William and then in the morning, connect to the northern section of the West Highland Line up to Mallaig. In 2009 this was voted Top Rail Journey by readers of Wanderlust, ahead of the iconic Trans-Siberian Railway and the Cuzco to Machu Picchu line in Peru.
