Including breakfast for three nights, the Serrano Hotel in San Francisco is a 4-star boutique hotel that's three blocks from the shopping district and park of Union Square and 20 minutes on foot from museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Contemporary Jewish Museum. It is a 10-minute cab ride to the famous Pier 39 -- where visitors can take a ferry to Alcatraz Island -- and from Fillmore Street, which is filled with boutiques, bars and cafes. The hotel has a fitness centre and offers free bicycle hire.
Taking the Big Sur coastline on Highway One, the next part of the trip is for two nights in the seaside city of Monterey in the Days Inn Monterey Downtown on a room-only basis. The hotel is five blocks from Downtown Monterey and Fisherman's Wharf -- which is filled with casual and fine-dining restaurants.
