The 700-year-old BridgeHouse Hotel is in the small town of Beaminster and true to its name, sits on top of a small bridge. All rooms at this cosy but modern property come with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Stephen Pielesz, head chef in the hotel's Beaminster Brasserie, trained at the Michelin-starred restaurant L'Aubergade in France; his seasonal menu currently includes sautéed Lyme Bay scallops with crispy pork belly and purée, and roasted monkfish with seasoned chilli squid and champagne caviar butter sauce.

The hotel is less than a 25-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, which spans 95 miles and is peppered with geological gems.
