The hotel's origins can be traced back to the 14th century, and the original monastery can still be found in the grounds. Set in the hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the Penha Longa is 21 miles from Lisbon and minutes from the coastal town of Cascais. It's a great spot for hiking and cycling trips.

As well as tennis courts and a spa, the hotel has two championship golf courses, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. All bedrooms have Egyptian cotton sheets, Nespresso coffee machines and private balconies.

The Arola restaurant is run by Sergi Arola, who trained under Ferran Adrià, the chef who ran the world-famous El Bulli restaurant. The menus take a contemporary twist on Portuguese cusine. Il Mercato serves Italian food, with ingredients and wine from Italy's 20 regions.
