Where to Stay in Tenerife?
Many people choose to visit Tenerife on package holidays and much of this mass market accommodation is in the southwest of the island at the neighbouring resorts of Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Of the three, the Costa Adeje is home to more high-end accommodation. Cerveza is cheap and plentiful in Playa de las Américas, which is the most lively as far as nightlife is concerned. Los Cristianos, just south of Playa de las Américas also has its fair share of nightspots, bars and restaurants offering international cuisine.
There are plentiful hotel rooms and apartments in these resorts and it is sometimes possible to get cheap deals and last-minute offers.
The north of the island is generally much quieter and there are several towns including Puerto de la Cruz and picturesque La Orotava which offer accommodation.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital, has a more traditional flavour than the southern beach resorts. There is a good choice of accommodation in the city which is home to the island’s famous carnival in February. From the busy port, boats leave for mainland Spain and other islands.
Tenerife Accommodation Options
Accommodation in Tenerife is plentiful and it is possible to find cheap hotel deals and last-minute offers. However if you are travelling to the island in its busiest months (December to April) and especially during the carnival in February, it is wise to book in ahead. School holidays are also particularly busy.
Much of the accommodation in Tenerife is geared towards the package holiday market, and there is a concentration of self-catering apartments and hotels, especially in the main beach resorts.
Away from these areas, there are better options for independent travellers, including sumptuous hotels on the north coast and casas rurales (rural hotels and guesthouses).
Tenerife Hotel Recommendations?
The Hotel San Roque sits in the shadow of Teide, Spain's highest mountain, a short distance from the old port and cobbled streets of Garachico in the north of the island. It offers stylish rooms in an 18th-century mansion.
For five-star luxury in a collection of turreted buildings, you could try The Hotel San Roque at Costa Adeje.
In Puerto de la Cruz, the Hotel Botanico offers a spa with indoor and outdoor pools. The hotel is set amid landscaped tropical gardens.
