Where to Stay in Seoul?

Downtown Gwanghwamun is one of the best areas in which to stay if you plan to visit Seoul’s historical sights, including its royal palaces. In this district there is a good variety of accommodation to suit most tastes and budgets, including backpacker guesthouses and cheap hotels.

For art galleries, an exciting choice of restaurants and shops selling exquisite handicrafts, Insadong is a good base. If you are looking for nightlife, which you are unlikely to find in Insadong, head to Myeong-Dong. This is a popular choice with young people and is also a good base for those wishing to shop in Seoul’s large department stores. There is a wide choice of top-end accommodation and more affordable options in Myeong-Dong.

For restaurants, bars and boutiques, upmarket Gangnam is your best bet, offering plenty of mid-range and more luxurious options. East of here is Jamsil where there are several tourist attractions and historical sights including royal tombs and a Buddhist temple.

Seoul Accommodation Options

Seoul offers visitors a huge variety of places to stay, from luxury hotels to traditional guesthouses. Seoul’s motels are a good budget option. They are normally family-run hotels and they often have surprisingly good facilities. Some offer traditional Korean 'yo' (thin mattresses placed on a heated floor). Instead of typical Western beds. Hanok guesthouses offer accommodation in traditional wooden houses with pretty courtyards.

For those with more money to spend, Seoul offers a wide choice of mid-range and luxury hotels, many of which can be found in Gangnam. You'll find many major international hotel chains in the Korean capital including the hip W Hotels, Hyatt, JW Marriott and Westin. Also increasingly popular are serviced apartments, which offer self-catering facilities.
